You didn't tell me what type of motorcyle you're working on. A grinding noise could be a bad starter gear, bad ring gear on the outer clutch hub, a bad over running clutch, or any number of things. I'd pull the outer primary and check the starter gear and ring gear first.

Sounds like a tuning issue if you have had a race tuner or some other type of fuel management installed. The grinding noise is probably the pump working to create the pressure it needs for the system.

Century 2004: Flywheel/Starter or miracle of Lucas oil?

The starter and gearbox are not connected by way of a grinding noise.
If it is the gearbox, I would get it serviced or replaced. If starter motor, the grinding noise will be there only when the dog gear is engaged when starting.

OR
The carriage is stuck or making a grinding noise. Solution 1. Lift the top cover to the printer. 2. Turn the printer off and then on again. 3. Unplug the power cable from the back of the printer when the grinding noise starts. 4. Move the carriage towards the middle of the printer (this procedure may take a couple of tries to get the timing correct). 5. Take out the cartridges and close the top cover. Turn the printer back on! 6. Reconnect the power cord. 7. Open the top cover, reinstall the cartridges, and then close the top cover
