It sounds like the internal rubber parts in the fuel petcock are worn out and need to be replaced. The two critical parts are a four hole washer and in many cases a vacuum diaphragm on the back of the petcock. All the parts are available through a Yamaha dealer except the vacuum diaphragm which is only available OEM in the assembly. You can purchase an aftermarket kit from K&L that has all the gaskets and diaphragms for around $35.

Where on the rear of the petrol tap do 3 lines/petrol pipes from the carbs go to.

No where they are breather pipes and allow air it enter the carbs while not letting dirt and grime to get in and cause blockages and also if your carbs do get some sort of blockage or floats get stuck the fuel can exit the carbs instead of pouring into your motor ,and these tubes are also used to take a reading using a vacuum gage while setting up your cabs and getting the fuel and air mixture right

How to remove a honda xbr 500 fuel tap

The GB has a purely mechanical tap with 3 positions being OFF - ON (main tank) and RES (reserve supply) Because the question asked related to the GB, I'm not sure why someone has added the XBR to the equation. Maybe it has a different tap,. I don't know. What I so know is that it is quite easy to undo the GB tap using a big shifter set at about 26mm. If you have a big openender of this size, that would be even better to use but this is a seriously big size for an oe spanner.Just turn the big nut anti clockwise and the whole tap assembly will come free.from the tank.

How to refill the reserve gas tank 1981 Honda CX500 motorcycle

there is only one tank to fill on your bike, your getting confused by the reserve. The reserve is just on the fuel tap itself. It has three positions, on , off and reserve. In the on position your fuel tap will be able to drink about 90% of your fuel tank and then it wont be able to drain anymore, then you must turn your fuel tap to the reserve position and it will be able to drink rest of your tank approx 10% that is left. So next time you fill up at a petrol station make sure your fuel tap is set to on, then when your bike starts to splutter out of fuel you can turn your fuel tap to reserve and get yourself to the petrol station to fill up, making sure you then turn your tap to on again. If you keep running out on the reserve it can cause debris in your tank to clog your carb up.
hope this helps
