Question about 1981 Honda GL 1100 Innerstate Gold Wing

1 Answer

1981 GL 1100. Put on new starter solenoid and it started great. Next week I had trouble with the engine starting. Turned over fine but, it was wet from rain. Turned it over for about 30 seconds. No start. Gave squirt of starting fluid. Fired up. Turned engine off. Starter will not turn over. Any suggestions. I am on vacation in northern Minnesota.

Tap on the starter with a plastic hammer. If it starts working you probably need new brushes in the starter. If new solenoid is not clicking when you push the button, the button may be dirty or broken. push the button halfway in and the headlight turns off. Then , push the button the rest of the way in and it should engage the solenoid.

1981 Honda GL 500. Used to be able to jump start. It would run only on high revs; would stall and had slight backfire at low revs. Put in new battery. Charger at 2 amps took a couple of hours to bring new...

Replace your main fuse on the starter solenoid. That should restore power. If you are having to jump the starter at the solenoid you may need a new solenoid. Your starter button could be the issue, in that case you would have to replace the switch assembly. As for running only on high revs, you need to take your carburetors apart and clean the idle circuit (jets an body passageways) These machines are notorious for burning out there spark plug caps. The caps unscrew from the end of the wires and should OHM out at 5000. If they read higher or lower replace them.

Check all fuses including one on start solenoid, make sure Kill switch is set to run, if there are safety devices on this bike u may need to be in neutral.if jumping power to the starter solenoid will turn it over start button may need cleaning or to be replaced if it is getting power.

1981 honda goldwing wont start

while trying to start an engine, and only the solenoid clicks, there are these 3 things- no juice from the battery, starter corroded contacts(the big cables) or starter is shot. so first make sure the battery is charged, next make sure the cable mounts from battery to starter are clean(no rust), if that is all good and doesnt start , remove starter and have it tested.

The neutral safety switch is located in the shifter housing.

Here is a link to a good article on this topic, that would beat an explanation from me.

Yes, it sounds like the NSS is the culprit.
