Those wires coming out of the alternator are supposed to be connected to a little circuit thing, and they get split off from there, If you get them apart and cleaned up, new ends, find the part that connects them, it still might work, you can test by putting your ac volt meter on one wire at a time and see if it throws some voltage, It should. Then you have to figure out where they went, one went to the regulator, one to the fuse box, etc, 3 wires I think. The stator / alternator come out fairly easy, sometimes you need an impact driver to break the nut loose, it is a tapered thing, Check it out.

How do I troubleshoot a starting problem for this generator?

First thing is to unhook the spark plug and have someone hold it about 1/4 inch away from the metal head or frame and then pull the starter and look for spark at the point of the wire near the head. If you see spark, the issue is with the fuel system, if you don't see spark then the issue is with the magneto. To check the magneto you need a meter that measures ohms. You are going to measure for resistance across the wires on the magneto looking for shorts and opens. IF there are none then you need to check the gap between the magneto and the flywheel. IT should be .001 inch. Don't neglect the spark plug, take it out and see if it has a short too.

So you don't have echo

No Spark can be one of 3 faults.
The wire to the spark plug is either shorted somewhere along its length. An open circuit along the wire coming out of the magneto or
the magneto is not generating a spark.
Best way to test for a spark is to use a neon test lamp.
Hold one end and bring the other end close to high voltage wire under test. Test on your running car first.
Trace the HV wire back to the magneto on side of engine. rotate engine by hand to get magneto to generate a current. Remove spark plug to allow engine to rotate easier without compression.
The high voltage is generated from a coil inside magneto assembly.
Good Luck

Gentron pro2 6000p has no spark

With small engines, ignition is magneto. Four things can cause a lack of spark: (1) Faulty plug - try a new plug; (2) Bad, shorting, or disconnected spark plug wire - check for high voltage from ignition coil; (3) Bad ignition coil - check for low voltage at the coil input wires; (4) Magneto failure - the pickup coils next to the flywheel may be shorted, loose, or disconnected, OR the magnets on the flywheel may have lost their field or come out. I would troubleshoot this problem by checking and eliminating each of these possibilities in the above order. If all of the first three check out good; I'd have a mechanic check the magneto because this requires at least partial disassembly of the motor.

Do you need a battery to start a 1972 250cc yamaha endero? ive check everything and it still wont run....

hi.
i am pretty sure that the enduro 250 gets the power for the spark direct from one of the magneto coils. there are 2 coils behind the magneto. one feeds the lighting and battery for the bike.
the other should run through a set of points, through the coil and then to the spark plug.
you should not need a battery at all to start the engine, but you may need to check the points and the coil, and the wires behind the magneto unit for any damage.

What would cause no spark? the mower is a masport 8/02 two stroke. Will not start and I have changed spark plug and cleaned every thing but still nothing.

Your spark plug wire may be damaged, or your magneto may be too weak to generate a spark. You also have a kill switch wired to your magneto, and a condensor. I would start by cleaning the contacts of the magneto and then check the gap between the magneto and the flywheel. The gap between the flywheel and magneto should be .010". I would start by checking the kill switch wire for damage. If any damage is suspected, replace the kill switch. Next, I would have the magneto tested or replaced. Also, check all your ground wires for damage, or loose contacts.

When you are checking for a spark, you should have the spark plug installed in the spark plug wire as normal, but not installed in the engine. The spark plug base should be grounded to the engine while trying to start and checking for a spark. If there is a weak spark, this is probably due to a worn magneto.

I am getting no spark at plug. Briggs model 31c707 motor. I have charged battery, adjusted valves, verified fuel line clear. Pull spark plug put into wire hold to motor and crank (no spark)

Hello, the next couple of things to check would be under the engine lid.

  1. Remove the screen over the air fan on the top of the fly wheel.
  2. Remove the 4 bolts securing the main lid and remove. Depending on the year of this engine it may have a secondary cover that Craftsman put on that will need to be removed first.
  3. When the lid is off you will see the magneto coil right above the spark plug; just follow the spark plug wire up to it.
  4. Use a wrench to see if the magnet on the fly wheel is strong. If the magnet is bad or really weak the flywheel will need to be replaced.
  5. Next check the magneto ground out wire. It will be a small black wire on the magneto. Unplug it then crank the engine. If the engine starts plug the wire back on the magneto and if it shuts down there is a short along the wire. It should only shut down or short out when the key is shut off. You will need to find the short if this is the problem.
  6. If the magnet is strong and the above test still fails to provide a spark then it is likely that the magneto is bad. You will need the rest of the model number; it will look something like: 31c707- # # # # - # # The part runs somewhere around $35.00 from Sears, but you might find it on-line cheaper.
  7. Replacing the magneto is pretty straight forward from there.
  8. Remove the old one and replace the old one adjusting it as far away from the flywheel as possible.
  9. Turn the flywheel until the magnet is directly across from the magneto.
  10. Put an ordinary business card between the magneto & the flywheel.
  11. Loosen the 2 screws that hold the magneto in place just enough for it to tighten up to hold the business card in place.
  12. Tighten the screws holding the magneto & rotate the flywheel to remove the business card.
  13. Test rotate the flywheel by hand a couple of full turns to ensure there is no contact with the magneto.
  14. Replace the small black wire, spark plug and spark plug wire, then test fire the engine.
  15. Shut the engine down and replace all the remaining parts in the reverse order as removed.
You should be good to go after this. If this was helpful please vote yes. Thank You!!

My RM 250 won't spark. The engines been taken

Things to check are

1/ Short out plug wire to good earth to check for spark, if none check rest of sequence. If spark, replace spark plug.
2/ Next check wiring connectors from the ingition module to coil and ensure they are all tight.
3/ This is quite technical but the use of a digital / analogue meter is required.
4/ Place a meter on each wire to the coil and crank (Without spark plug in) there should be some voltage / current flow through the feed wires (Not the earth - Black) If nothing trace back to Generator.
5/ Forgot to mention the kill switch operation, if unsure bridge these wires together.
Other than that the other tests involve sound electrical knowledge and is beyond the scope of the average person.
A thought, if this model has a battery ensure its fully charged.

I have a 2 cycle weed eater 31cc couple years old with no spark??

Hmmm.....This tells me that your magneto has gone bad. take apart the outer plastic casing of the trimmer and follow the spark plug cap back to where it ends. (Not far away) This piece of plastic looking thing pressed up against the flywheel (A Round wheel with several fins sticking up on it) is called the magneto undo the screws that hold it in place and install the new magneto. Make sure before you undo these screws that know where the wires that are attatched go. They are for the kill-switch, (The switch that turns off the engine) and are either attached to the magneto with the screws that hold it in, or are attached to these tiny flat metal pins with and unknown name. Hope this solves your problem, and good luck!

My XR 1991 250r is just not kicking over, there is a very weak spark there, could the coil be faulty ?

no, the coil works or it don't work. Take a look at the magneto, check your gap on the spark plug, and check the magneto and see if it is rusted. Your spark plug wire might also be cracked.
