Question about 1990 Yamaha XT 600 E

1 Answer

84 XT600, starts and idles, but won't rev up without feathering the throttle, spits and backfires, then dies as if the key was shut off, the warmer it gets the worse it gets, have done everything but reset the timing, don't know how and have no manual to refer to! I Cleanes the carb, ign sw, new battery, new plug, checked wiring, but not the coil or cdi or other components. I live in Colorado, is jetted for Aspens altitude. Thx, Dan

Check your valve clearances, They should be (cold) 0.07 - 0.12mm intake, and 0.12 - 0.17mm exhaust.

Is muffler clogged or exhaust pipe(s) kinked?

The ignition timing is fixed and the cam timing cannot slip or change unless the camchain has stretched too far for the tensioner to take up the slack and/or there is excessive wear on rocker arms and cam faces.

Valve seats may be worn or pitted.

Does it have good compression?, you will have to turn magneto nut with a 3/4" socket or put bike on a box with rear wheel free and turn over in gear.

You can download a free owner's manual with all relevent spec's from this site....

2001 explorer sport , fuel pump? vacuum leak? 619 scan tool data provided, any suggestions/solutions

The fuel pump is suspect but I believe there's also a fuel filter inline on the underside of the drivers side chassis. Fuel works off pressure so if the filter is clogged, the pressure remains between the fuel tank and the filter. Once the fuel has siphoned off between the filter and injectors, it dies but because there's positive pressure at the fuel pump, it won't come on until the pressure slowly seeps past the clog after hours. It's worth a look!

When cold starts but dies.to start, peddle to floor, rev a minute then it idles but at times dies when accelerating from a stop. Raw gas smell present and puff of blue smoke when it starts.

have you checked the cylinder compressions as backfire and blue smoke can be a symptom of low compression , either rings or valve seats but would need a dropdown test to be sure

2000 polaris 300 2 stroke explorer idles fine but dies on acceleration or backfires when you feather gas to get it to rev up

Main jet in carburetor partially plugged? Has it been sitting a while, probably varnish from old gas. Clean carburetors.
