The year makes a big difference, but normal carb mixture starting position is 1.5 turns out, not all the way in. But mixture normally does not effect starting. Usually backfiring is timing or jumped chain? But can happen if a float is stuck and gas pouring in.
You can narrow the search by looking for any twin lead 12 volt points ignition coil, as long as you dont get a cdi, or electronic ignition coil, any point coil will do the job
Is it cranking ok? does it sound week? Check the Carbs, for clogged jets, look at the spark plugs and wires, and if no problem there check anything with fuel
