I had the same problem before when I got my bike. I was trying to start the bike and always giving throttle. I figured just start with choke on and it starts (do not give any throttle).

1981 Yamaha XJ 550 MAXIM will not start in cold weather. The bike tries to start when the ignition is pressed, but it doesn't seem to be receiving any assistance from the starter. I have never hea

Hi, Chris before testing any electrical component in the Starter Circuit it is "IMPERATIVE" that you have a fully charged battery of 12.5 volts or more and be able to pass a proper "LOAD" test because your battery may have 12.5 volts or more but little or zero amps causing the battery to be faulty and must be replaced, especially "AGM" batteries.
1. Ignition Switch not in the "ON" position.
2. Engine Run Switch in the "OFF" position.
3. Check the battery terminals for damage or corrosion check the battery cables at "BOTH" ends for loose, corroded, or broken connectors, "INSIDE" and outside the cable harness, perform connector wiggle test and check cables with an ohmmeter.
4. Bank angle sensor needs a reset or is faulty.
5. FOB battery low or dead.
6. Faulty ignition switch.
7. Faulty starter button.
8. Faulty kickstand or clutch pull in switch/sensor.
9. Security alarm needs a reset.
10. Starter relay, solenoid, starter have failed or circuit wiring faulty.
11. Starter armature or field coils have failed.
12. Main fuse or circuit breaker may be blown or faulty.
13. The electric starter is working but starter clutch has failed.
14. Check for engine trouble codes.

Hi, Not_so_peach the starter drive/Bendix/clutch is a mechanical gear driven component that engages the clutch pack ring gear to turn over the engine. It has an internal mechanism that allows the gear to turn in one direction and once the engine starts allows the drive gear to free spin. If gear free spins in both directions then the drive gear has failed, it is not serviceable and needs to be replaced. I have my nephews 83 Maxim in my garage, when I start the bike oil flows from what I believe is the drive shaft vent tube into the air box. What would cause the pressure in the driveshaft to increase to...

I think what you are looking at is the crankcase vent line.....the blowby gases from the engine flow into the airbox to be burnt with the incoming air.
Have a close look at the oil level in the crankcase....Yamaha usually has an oil window ....down low on the side of the crankcase....with the bike warmed up and shut down a few minutes on the centerstand...the oil level should be about half way in the glass.....overfilling the crankcase will cause the oil carryover situation you describe.

My 83 yamaha maxim won't kick over. It has power and its getting gas. I'm stumped. Need help!

Hi and welcome to the site,

Initially, by "won\'t kick over", do you mean the starter will not turn? If yes, check the starter relay. To locate the starter relay, follow the cable from the battery's + terminal.

If on the other hand, the starter will spin but engine will not catch, then check for presence of spark on the plugs.

Good luck and thank you for asking.

have a look in the headlight as all the wiring is usually at the back there , you could have a loose connection .
Just unscrew the headlight and have a look through all the wires and make sure all connections are ok .
