Question about Honda XR 125 L Motorcycles

1984 xr 80 runs rough lacks power falls on face with full throttle runs best at 1/4 throttle. Cleaned carb, has good spark, 150 compression. Getting ready to check points and timing. Any other suggestions?

Make sure petcock screen isn't pluged, check gas tank overflow/vacume line is clear, check main jet for condition and correct sizing for your area, (remember japan is close to sea level and that is what they are jetted for at the factory), check needle jet is not pluged or damaged, check that the jet needle is perfectly clean and not tilted, if jet needle can be adjusted try adjusting up one notch.use zip ties at all the fuel line connections, the pinch type fuel line clips don't work well with our 1/4 inch or 5/16 inch fuel lines. ( it cost me a lot of time finding that out, lol), check points and timing (for about a $140.00 you could update) I am assuming you are using a new premium plug in the correct heat range for your driving requirements. How to start a 1979 30 hp evinrude


Hey Norman,
There are only three things required for a internal combustion engine to run.
I have one issue.. I DO NOT see a 30HP built in 1970 - 1983?? They are 35HP. The first 30HP I see was built in 1984.
1. A good timed spark (New spark plug) - The correct one. (CHAMPION QL77J4 - qty. 2)-1984 30Hp.
2. A proper fuel air ratio (with yours also the proper oil/gas mixture)
3. Good compression (for your engine - w/carb wide open 120psi)
A service manual will help you ( MarineEngine.com)

Grab a buddy to help you do these..:
1. Make sure your spark plug will fire. Hold the spark plug hex against the head and have your buddy pull the cord..it should fire a juicy blue spark,, BUT - a healthy orange spark will work. If there is no spark..(double/triple check this!!).. stop here until you get a spark!!
2. Have the carb cleaned and set..by a competent professional (one this old can be fixed by a trained professional motorcycle mechanic -its the SAME SIMPLE type carb - I repair "carbed" outboard engines too!).
3. You can hold your finger in the spark plug hole TIGHLY and have your buddy pull the rope.. it should BLOW your finger off the hole.. if you are not sure - get a compression gauge - use the 1/2" depth threads, screw it in until the oring seats..put the throttle wide open - WITH THE SPARK PLUG REMOVED and AWAY FROM YOUR HANDS...pull the starter rope hard about 5-7 times!! It should pump up to about 115lbs.+ minimum!!
If these above items are correct.. you engine should/will run!!

1996 geo prizm will turn over but will not start.


CHECK FUSES TO MAKE SURE FUEL PUMP FUSE IS NOT BLOWN. MAKE SURE THAT YOU ARE GETTING GAS FROM THE TANK BY CHECKING THE FUEL LINE AFTER THE FUEL FILTER. SOMETIME THE FUEL FILTER CAN BE CLOGGED UP.

could be the float , clean carb again . if it was me id check the compression , easy stuff first . then check the spark output to know if your getting weak spark after its warmed up . the service manual explains how to check the electrical system.

My evenrude mo# te150gleis starts but idles rough and wont get the boat to plane what are some possible issues to look at thanks


Put in some "sea foam" fuel additive and see if that is a help, I've also cleared some gunk running the choke while at full throttle (unless this has the enrichment system). That creates a great vacuum- and may **** the remainder of stuff from the jets. Otherwise you will have to rebuild your carbs.

If you can find the idle jets, remove them and put carb cleaner directly in the holes - then re seat them and adjust in the water for best idle.

Check your compression and spark for possible ignition issues and old "run hot" damage.

Since you don't indicate the make and model, I can't give you specifics, but when I had this problem it turned out to be a dirty carb. This can cause uneven fuel flow and loss of power. At full throttle, you may not be getting sufficient fuel to work properly. Try cleaning the carb a nd update this with the results.

Those bikes can be a pain to start after they've sat awhile. What always worked for me was twist the throttle a bunch. I mean make sure its flooded. Then lay the bike over on its left side until the gas runs out the overflow. Stand it up and lay it down until it stops running out. Then I squeeze the decompression lever and cycle the motor. Now just barely pull on the decompression lever to open the valve just barely. Get it to top dead center and give her a good kick with a twist of the throttle. Becareful it could kick back.
This technique works for when the bike stalls when its hot. Most important part is if you think its flooded lay it over and start the process over. Remember your XR has two carbs and will flood QUICK. After some practice you'll be able to hear it in the exhaust pipe if she's flooded or if she trying to come around. Trust me. I have four of these bikes. Two 83's, one 84 and my beloved 85.

If you are getting gas than you have an air leak somewhere between your carb and the head. When the bike is ideling take a can of wd-40 spray slowly around every possable connection. ( rubber boot & where it bolts to the head ) When it sucks in air and wd-40 it will speed up and reveal the air leak. The boot itself could have a crack in it.

You need to check a few things. The spark first, you need to check if it is running correctly, does it have spark, by doing this: take out the spark, put it against a metal surface and pull the pull start if it spark, your good if not you need a new spark plug. Clean out your airfiilter it migth help too. Buy some carb and choke cleaner squirt it up theough the airfilter hole, and start the engine, this will clen the carb. yOU MIGHT NEED TO TAKE OUT THE CARB AND CLENA I OUT THROUGHOULY!!! Try that and it whould work after all these steps!

What about teh crakshaft??

I got a 1995 cr250 dirtbike and i have a problem starting it it wont start but keeps back firing the bike has a bran new rebuild it allways had a problem starting it. but now it wont start i took the carb...


im thinking if it has spark and getting gas and has compression, the bike will run. sometimes a "WEAK" coil will give a good spark, but under compresion its not enough to ignite the fuel. if thats not the case, take the air filter off and spray starting fluid into the carb and with NO CHOKE, give it full throttle and kick it over. if that dont do it try compression starting it, tow it for some distance if you have to. if that dont do it, then there must be something wrong with the carb. jets, fuel air adjustment. thats all i have. good luck.
