Can You Fill A Car Battery With Water?

Yes and no. Some batteries are sealed and therefore do not come equipped with removable covers. If yours has covers that can be removed, you can fill them but use only distiller water be dont overfill!! You want to make sure the plates (inside) are covered with water. Use a flashlight to see inside.

I have a 1988 Mercury Cougar and for some reason even though the Ignition is off it keeps pulling down my battery

Something is grounded. It could be a wire with worn insulation or maybe a cigar lighter.

  1. Charge the battery.
  2. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  3. Connect a 12 V test lamp between the battery cable and the negative battery post. The light should become bright.
  4. Remove fuses one at a time and see if the test light turns off. (If not replace the fuse.)
  5. Once you find out which circuit is a fault you can continue using the test lamp to isolating the bad component.

God luck.

It will not steam. We put in a solution of vinegar and 2 parts water from a pitcher that filters water. Will this be considered distilled water or is distilled water critical?

Distilled water and filtered water are not the same. Distilled water is water that has been boiled then condensed so that most of the impurities that cause water hardness (Sodium, Calcium, etc.) have been removed. Filtering does not remove these which is why your iron will clog up much quicker. Same applies to your car battery, distilled water only! To clean it mix "Lime Away" with water about 1/4 cup with water every 6 months or so, then rinse with clean water a few times to get rid of the green color, steam until it comes out clear again..

When the motor is running cold the headlights don't come on and turn signals don't work until the car has been run for some time. rear window deicer also doesnt work and the seat heaters.

Check battery. Clean battery terminals to shiny metal both post and clamp. Check water level fill with Distilled water if too low.
You may have some bad connections at alternator. Auto parts may help you check battery and alternator. How are the belts to the alternator? Last time serviced?

My t595 had flat battery now wont start after charging, bikes not turning over. Help!

!. Make sure that the battery terminals are clean, not corroded and tight.
2. Take a voltmeter and measure the voltage at the battery terminals before and after trying to start it. The voltage before attempting to start it should be about 12.2-13 volts. After attempting to start the bike and it not starting, measure and record the battery voltage again; after a minute measure the battery voltage again for a 3rd time and it should be above 12 volts. If the battery reads about 12 volts or higher before/after attempting a start, the battery is probably good. If the battery voltage reads 12.2 or higher before the attempted start but not after the attempted start, the battery is most likely bad.

3. Connect a jumper from your motorcycle first then to another 12 volt battery (it can be in a car or another motorcycle). Attempt to start the motorcycle again and if it does crank now, the battery or connections are bad.

4. The battery may have been overcharged and damaged. If it is a maintenance type battery that has a place for filling it with acid, remove tops/covers/plastic plugs that are used for filling. Look into battery cells with a flash light (or use the fill lines on the side of the battery) to see if the cells are low or emptied of acid/water. If the cells are low, try refilling them to the correct level with distilled water, recharge the battery, put it back in the battery and retry it. If it worked with the jumper in place but does not work with the stock battery, the battery is most likely bad.

Added water to my car battery and it is boiling while charging

It has to be distilled water not drinking water, there is a difference, additionally make sure all the covers are off, batteries can explode during charging causing serious injuries and burns if not allowed to breathe. During charging there is a chemical reaction so some bubbling will occur but it shouldnt be boiling or bubbling and the battery shouldnt be hot to the touch, if it is bubbling and hot to the touch stop.

Batery not charging completely

Check your connections to the battery, the ground to the frame and at the starter. How old is the battery. If you have caps on the battery, remove them and check the water level in the battery. If down, fill with distilled water until the bottom the the plastic inside the cap or hole in the battery cell.

I have a accent and noticed it has water in the battery, how do you know it is low, and what kind of water

Most batteries are maintenance-free, and don't require addition of water. But if your battery has removable caps, you can check the level. Use distilled water and fill to the ring just below the cap.

Your starter or the starter solenoid on top of the starter is bad. Take the starter to any auto parts store like Chief's/NAPA/Schuck's/Kragen....they will check it for FREE!!!
