87 5.8l backfire when accelerating

The 5.8 engine uses a carb.
Have you changed the fuel filter, and looked for vac leaks ?
Its also possible the carb has dirt or varnish plugging up holes internally due to the age.

I have bought a used vt1100 shadow. I sat for 2 years and gas was drained out of carbs and tank. I replaced fuel pump and it now runs good and revs up great when parked. it has all power going through it...

You are going to have to take the carbs apart and clean them. It sounds like the tubes that feed the fuel are gummed up.Yes the bike was drained but it only takes a very small amount of fuel to varnish up these things.I have never bought a bike that didn't need this. The holes in the emulsion tubes are very fine so work carefully ,compressed air is helpfull to blow the garbage out.Do them one at a time and take notice of the position of all the settings.invest in a good impact driver to take out the Philips head machine screws, and at the end of it all take the bike in and have them balance the carbs with a mercury gauge set.Winters coming so its a good job for those snowy nights.Good luck

I have a 1986 yamaha virago 700 that wont run properly

2 things need to be done first start your bike get a can of wd40 after your bike is warm and running spray around the carb jointsall 4 of them if your engine changes rpms up or down you have a intake leak ether your carb joint gaskets or o-rings need replacing or your carb joints are old and need replacing. at this point wont hurt to have you carbs cleaned also

Leaking gas badly from carb. 2003 750 shadow spirit

The gas has varnished and turned to ****. You need to take it to a shop and have the carbs cleaned. Next time you decide to store the bike put fuel stabilizer in the tank and run the bike untill the stabilizer gets into the carbs. When you want to store it, turn the gas off and let the bike run all the remaining gas in the carbs out. That is your best bet. Chaz Moto DC

It just wont start. it sat for about 3 years. i got it started after new gas,oil and removed the air filter. it only ran for a few minutes at high idle. then backfired throught the carbs. now sometimes it...

Gas will turn to varnish in as little as 6 months.
The new gas was just enough to get the varnish nice and sticky before it started giving you fits. There is noway the carburetor will function correctly after 1 year let alone 3 without maintenance on the carb. This will require the carburetor to be removed and completely disassembled and cleaned. This is not rocket science and with just a few tools and a bit of skill anyone can do it. However if you have never done it before the very least you need to do is get a service manual. It will give you a far better explanation of the task then I can give here.
Hope this helps.

Mess up

Your bike is most likely running a little lean on the idle/slow-speed circuit. The jets might need a cleaning, or you've got a slight air leak somewhere. Other possibilities ... - Idle mix screw out of adjustment (Probably not as it's sealed and 'supposed to be' tamper free) - Carbs slightly out of synch
