Question about 2003 kawasaki ZX-12R

My zx12 starts an idles funny, sometimes stalling or sounding like it is loading with fuel. As soon as the temp guage starts coming up it seems to settle. This problem started last year. The past two rides running great at lower rpm but anything over 7000rpm where the power is it falls flat on its face like the valves are floating?? One other thing the bike on it's first start this year started sounded like it loaded with fuel stalled, and would not restart. I dumped oil changed plugs and the bike restarted and is running but not well.

Hi, Johnny_auto nice novella and the usual suspects are:
1. Spark plugs in bad condition or partially fouled.
2. Spark plug cables in bad condition and leaking check for spark leakage in the dark.
3. Spark plug gap too close or too wide.
4. Faulty ignition coil, module, and or sensor.
5. Battery nearly discharged.
6. Check battery terminals for damage or corrosion, check the battery cables at "BOTH" ends for loose, corroded, or broken connectors, "INSIDE" and outside the cable harness, perform connector wiggle test and check cables with an ohmmeter if necessary.
7. Intermittent short circuit due to damaged wire insulation.
8. Dirty air filter
9. Intake air leak.
10. Water, dirt, or rust in the fuel system, fuel pump and/or filter.
11. Old dead or bad fuel.
12. Faulty fuel pressure regulator
13. Pinholes in the in tank plastic convoluted tubing from the pressure regulator to the quick disconnect check valve.
14. Fuel tank vent system plugged.
15. Throttle body controls misadjusted.
16. Damaged throttle body or intake seals.
17. Clogged or faulty fuel injectors.
18. Loose, dirty, or corroded ignition module connector at crankcase.
19. Faulty TPS, MAP, CKP, O2, and/or CMP sensors.
20. Incorrect valve timing.
21. Weak or broken valve springs.
22. Damaged intake or exhaust valve.
23. The control module may be in limp mode.
24. Check for engine trouble codes.

are you turning the choke off after its warmed up? most will not run with the choke on and warmed up.

also try running it with the gas cap open to see if you have a vent issue in your tank. if air can't get in, then gas can't flow.

if not a choke or vent issue, then try this. turn the petcock off and then disconnect the fuel lines one at a time going into the carb. start with carb fuel line #1 disconnected (and the rest connected) and in a coffee can, turn petcock on and ignition too. fuel pump should come on momentarily and inject some fuel. see how the quantity looks. reconnect the line to carb #1 and repeat for carbs #2 - #4. your looking for a decrease in fuel to a couple of cylinders.

if all looks fine, i would then focus on the carb floats & jets. have the carbs been off for a good cleaning lately? modern fuel breaks down quickly and could cause a gumming condition in the carbs. spraying the sea foam or carb cleaner into the carbs is bypassing the everything in the carb bowl (but it means the spark plugs are ok) so there could be an obstruction. i would look there first.

if uncomfortable removing the bank of carbs, you can try a quick fix first. with the petcock closed, open the drain screws of each carb and let the gas drain out. go and buy some yamaha carb cleaner (liquid in a black bottle) at a yamaha motorcycle dealer. mix it in a separate container with gas as recommended. close the drain screws on each carb. pour the mixture into each fuel line feeding the carb and let it sit overnight. DO NOT POUR THIS MIXTURE INTO YOUR TANK. its not a fuel additive, but a cleaner that will not harm orings or gaskets, but it will not ignite with a spark plug. open the drain screws the next morning and let the mixture pour out. reconnect the fuel lines to the carbs and test drive it.

if that didn't work, then removing the carbs for a good cleaning is my next step. good luck.

Remove battery and get it charged the tested..More likely its failed. when engine is running check battery voltage it should be 12.8 to 14.2 volts with good battery

i'd start with removing the carbs and giving them a thorough cleaning as when bikes sit for so long, the carbs begin to get gummy/varnished from the old gas.

check for blocked holes in the pilot jet & main jet and look for "hard & dried up" gas in passages. be careful of the float bowl gasket as to not tear it or you will need a replacement.

Might be a fault in the side stand sensor, you cant go far with the side stand out, or if the sensor has not sensed the stand is up.

Hi there!

make sure your carburetors are clean. I guess you've done that already. I had this problem once and i drained the carburetor fuel reservoir and found out that it had water mixed in it. Pull on the chock and ram the throttle several times to get rid of any water stuck on the jets. Also, clean the plugs, and let the chamber dry for a while like 30 minutes... replace the spark plugs.

Check the ECU engine temperature sensor. If it thinks the engine is hot, it will struggle to run when cold.

sounds like a possible water temp issue... check your thermostat and/or water temp sensor. when you first start your engine the computer uses the water temp reading to do a 'cold start' scenario, more fuel. once you reach normal operating temp the fuel should be cut back. if the thermostat is not opening and closing properly this can cause strange readings from the water temp sensor (which is mounted near the thermostat)... unlikely the sensor is bad, but a possibility... more likely the thermostat.

Stalling when engine temp reaches 160 degrees


Here are my theories

Idle Air Control valve (IAC) - allows a small amount of air to pass though throttle body at idle since the butterfly in the throttle body is closed at this time - if this doesn't open the vehicle will stall

Air Intake Temp Sensor - Helps correct air fuel ratio by measuring the temp of the air coming through the intake

Oxygen Sensor - Largest determinate of air/fuel ratio after the vehicle almost reaches operating temp which is approx 160 degrees

Coolant temp sensor - Largest determinate of the air/fuel ratio from cold up to the point when the oxygen sensor takes over

EGR Valve - 5.2 Liters are known for these failing, they redirect a small amount of exhaust gases back into the intake manifold for re-burning (emissions thing). Sometimes they get stuck closed and allow for too much exhaust gas back into the manifold. But usually this would cause very poor performance as well as shuddering and stalling

Use what you know about your condition and what these common fail items are and see if any of them sound like the problem
