Question about 2003 Yamaha Road Star Silverado

1 Answer

Mine is a 2003 Yamaha Silverado, with only 2000 miles. The bike went unused for the past two years. I can get it started, but when I give it throttle, or shut off the choke, it stalls. Why, and what can I do?

The problem is going to be plugged up jets and circuits in the carbs. Evaporated gas has left a varnish buildup inside the carbs. Condensation inside the carbs and gas tank has also left a mess. The carbs will need to be removed and cleaned. This is best done by a shop if you have no experiance in balancing the carbs after re-mounting them.

Check the battery and make shure it is fully charged. Check the coils to see if they have went bad. You can have them tested at any repair shop. Last the CDI could have went bad.

It's your stator failing, these bikes are notorious for bad stators. A failing stator means the bike can't produce the electricity it needs to run, and the bike is running on the battery only. Replace the stator and make sure your battery is fully charged and you will be good to go.

If you're going through regulators that often I would suggest going after the stator. Make sure it's not grounding out on the chassis. Find the 3 yellow or white wires that are connected to the regulator. using a meter in OHMS ( looks like the horseshoe ) with the bike off check wire one (red ) to wire 2 ( black ) then wire one ( red ) to 3 (black ), then 2 (red ) to 1 ( black ) and 2 ( red ) to 3 ( black ) , then pick one ( red ) and black to the chassis, motor, ground. somewhere metal on the bike. The first series of tests you should get some sort of numbers, ( which should be somewhat close in numbers ) When you go to ground, Chassis you should get no numbers, OFL, OL, or the horseshoe sign if you get numbers there, the stator is bad and your transmitting ac voltage to the chassis.

The dealer is not interested.
The bike is set up very lean to meet emissions standards. Any of them will benefit from larger jets. It's probably running too lean.

Three years with that few miles sounds like a good candidate for bad gas. I would start by taking the carb off and cleaning it really well with carb cleaner.

Value

I checked the NADA valuation book and they don't go back past 2003. A 2003 Nighthawk shows an average retail of $1590. Your bike is 16 years old. Parts will become a problem. Most dealers will not work on a bike more than 10 years old. At 14K miles there should be a lot of life left in the bike and you say it is pretty sweet. Check the cost of a new bike to what the seller wants for the old bike. Personally, I would call it a vintage bike and offer $2000.
