Question about 1981 Suzuki GS 750 L

1 Answer

I have a 1981 Suzuki 750 motorcycle. Upon arriving home from work, I fire it up without any problems, take it for a nice ride, and come back home. If I try to start it immediately afterwards, it may start start on the first try (but usually not), and definitely will not start on any subsequent attempts. If I wait about an hour and try again, it will start. This seems to me to rule out any electrical problems and point towards the carbs. I did notice the smell of gasoline when pulling into my garage, and thought maybe the mixture was too rich and flooding, but it will not even crank or turn over when I try to start. I hit the push button and it does nothing. I can roll start it quite easily, however. Any ideas???

It doesn't sound like a carb problem to me. If the bike will not turn over when pressing the starter button, the problem is electrical and tied to the starter solinoid, starter button, starter motor or wire connections.

Ok. I think I agree with you on the starter/solenoid issue...but what I don't understand is why it would work while it is cold, but then not when it is hot? How does the temperature affect the electical components?

  • tombones Aug 04, 2010

Temperature causes expansion and contraction of metals and can affect contacts and electrical windings. Additionally, temperature and time mixed with contaminants can combine to tarnish metal surfaces causing lower surface conductivity. A shiney copper contact conducts electricity better than a discolored and dull contact. Electricity flows with less resistance in cold metals than in hot metals. Scientific fact. Generally speaking, heat damages electrical components.

1981 suzuki gs750. Replaced stator, wasn't charging. Charging now, but spark plug fire is real weak. Runs good at low rpms, but sputters at higher rpms.

Have you checked the points? Be sure to clean the point contacts, also she may need a new condenser if it is not new (they break down with age). Did you clean the carbs? Did you mess with any adjustment screws? post back with what things you have done.

I was riding my 1981 Suzuki GS 750 L Motorcycle and the motor just turn off

Wow! Without a lot more information (and there may not be anymore) I would have to say your isse is electrical in nature, unless the bike spit and sputtered before cutting out. If the bike just shut off like someone turned the key off, then... check for power through to your ignition, check your kill switch, check from the battery out. No there is not a single "oh this is the problem answer". You have an electrical issue, this means a short, bad fuse, bad relay, a loose connection, and or a bad switch. you will have to go through the circuit till you find where power stops. check and see if you are getting fire to the plugs first. Please post your findings here so we can try and get to the bottom of the issue. good Luck.
