Question about 1974 Yamaha DT 360

3 Answers

I have a 1974 yamaha dt360. It sit in a garage for many years with fuel in it. The gas that was in the carb. had turned into a solid white powder. The carb. was so bad I had to get another one. The new carb. I put on it was a 2 stroke Mikuni carb. but it was a little bigger bore in the throtle slide and a little larger in diameter of air intake. The bike starts right up but smokes bad, and won't pick up rpm's. I disconected my auto oil injector, and mix my own fuel to make sure it has oil and dosen't seize up. I tried taking it out on the road hoping it would clean itself out, but that failed. I noticed that it went through a full tank of gas in aproximently 10 to 15 miles. Also I notesed that the crank case oil was a little full, and now I am changing it, but haven't tried running it yet. If there is anything you can tell me about first: the carb. being larger. second: disconnecting the oil injector. third: it going through so much fuel. forth: the crank case oil being to full. Thank You For any imformation on this matter. James S. Walberg

Check your fuel pump, as if this is gas in the oil.... then the theory is directly related to a defective fuel pump leaking fuel into the crankcase and also by doing so chewing up your fuel mileage.
Also if this carb is not sitting properly on the intake manifold it will and can have or develope a real nasty vacumn leak causing the engine to get poor fuel efficiency.
Be sure you have drained and flushed the fuel tank real thorough and the fuel lines.
Try to get the right carb for the bike and reattach the oil injector system after you run the tank low of premixed fuel/oil.

Sorry about my last post referencing the fuel pump..... I am over tired and got your bike problem confused with a motor vehicle problem.... bikes are gravity fed from the tank.

Your new carb needs to be jetted, being a mikuni, it should be no problem. But I would go with a dyna-flow adjustable carb kit, they work great. The factory jets won't work because like you said , it is a bigger body. But you have probably got both jets wide open and dumping fuel so fast it can't burn it all, and being a 2 stroke if it sucks the fuel up into the cylinder from below, it can be sucked down into the crankcase as well, so get the kit, I found some on ebay, cheap, get it installed, you won't believe the difference. You might have o play with the intake a bit, cut it down or open it up, Check it out, Hope this helps.

You're trying to put too much air/fuel mix into the engine.
This is your whole problem. There's no way you can burn that much mixture, so it will smoke, drain fuel into the oil, and bog.

Put on the right size carb and it should fix all problems.

Tip

1974 Yamaha dt360

My friend Dan and I have been working on vintage Yamaha's for over 10 years now. We know a good bit about different dt model's. We are not certified mechanics, so everything we know is from years of experience, and older generation riders experiences. My tip is about the Oil Pump that injects two stroke oil when you give it throttle. Last year i bought a near mint condition, 1974 Yamaha dt360. When overhauling the bike, my long time friend and riding partner Dan who owns about 5 different yamaha's, models from the late 60's the late 70's, suggested we disconnect the oil pump (clutch side) and drain all the oil out and pre mix the gas. Reasoning for this is he has heard numerous stories over the years about the pumps either seizing, or when you lay the bike over air bubbles can form which will then increase chances of the system not functioning properly causing the motor to seize. I kept mine installed on the bike, but disconnected the hose on the inside of the cover and drained all the old oil out, now I pre mix the gas. Thanks for reading.
