Can a car with a broken starter motor be jump started?

If it's the starter motor itself that's knackered it won't start with anything, other than a bump start. Jumping won't knacker the battery though, and if the starter is seized it just won't turn over. Hook it up and give it a go, it won't do any harm. Worst case only give it five or six turns. If it turns over' at all' it's going to be fine.

Why will it start only if I just bump the key?

What I understand from your posting is that if you use the key to start in the normal way, then it will not start, but if you turn the ignition on and 'bump start' the vehicle without using the starter motor, the vehicle starts. If this is correct, then the problem is that the starter motor is consuming all the power for itself and the resultant voltage drop means that the coil and ignition are left wanting for power. Thus you don't get a good enough spark when the starter is engaged. The causes could be a number of things:- a weak battery, dirty or incorrectly set spark plugs, bad ignition leads causing tracking, badly set points gap or dirty points. bad starter motor (worn brushes or 'leaking' coil windings).
Personally, I would start with getting the ignition system up to scratch, new points and plugs, then correctly adjust the ignition timing.

I have a 1998 f-150 4.2l v-6 tryed to start it today it turned over and did not catch. turned key to try again it bumped the starter but would not turn the engine over. I tryed jumping it but I knew I had...

When you say 'it bumped the starter but did not turn the engine over' and 'it bangs the starter' it sounds like you mean it hits the flywheel and will not turn the engine. If it engages and does not turn the motor you need to try to manually turn both directions. Do not have the key in the ignition. If it won't turn you may have a froze up motor.
If you mean the starter spins freely but won't engage the engine - than you need a new starter. Let us know what you find out.

I am trying to start my motorcycle and the relay for the starting system behind the battery is buzzing. I bought another one and it is still doing it

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

Initially, have the battery externally charged and checked / load tested.  The buzzing indicates that the relay is turning on & off in a continous cycle hence the buzzing sound. Possible causes could be a weak battery or a loose ground connection of the starter relay through the diodes, a faulty starter switch or a faulty starter motor.  To determine which:
  • when starting again, short the 2 big terminals of the starter relay but expect a big spark;
  • if the starter motor spins, then possibly the diodes and/or the start button switch would need checking;
  • if the starter motor does not turn, then the starter motor would need looking into more particularly the carbon brushes and/or the commutator segments.

Incidentally, have you tried bump starting the bike?

Good luck and thank you for asking FixYa.

When ignition turned, just get a click. All other electrical works, radio, power windows, etc. I think it's probably the starter.

Kawasaki zzr600e wont start

If you are not getting the starter to wind after pressing the start switch check these probs.Have you checked the fuses for the ignition switch? Check all fuses. Track the wiring from switch and check all plugs and connections.  Turn ignition on and try clutch starting the bike to see if the motor will run once it is cranked over. If you need to bump it, make sure all your connections and wiring are all making good contact. You must conduct a process of ilimination in order to rectify the fault. good luck.

Starter not work but can bump start nissan sunny "N" reg

Rock your car back and forth. The starter is stuck between teeth. I had a jeep that had the same problem. It had teeth missing on the starter motor. This seemed to do the trick
