START BUTTON AND HEADLIGHT

Hi, Ludwig if your headlight is not working, only one beam works, keeps burning out, blinking, or is dim the first thing you need to check is the headlight bulb for damaged filaments then check your light circuit fuse, then check your head light bulb socket ground wire for a clean tight connection, that being said the usual suspects are:
1. Faulty ground or power supply wire to headlight bulb socket.
2. Worn down solder contacts or loose fit of the bulb base in the socket due to vibration.
3. Worn, chaffed, or broken wires in the light circuit.
4. Corroded, broken, or loose pins/sockets in wire connectors.
5. Faulty hi/lo beam switch.
6. Faulty ignition switch.
7. Fuse is good but no continuity on both sides.
8. Faulty wiring between battery positive and headlight bulb socket.
9. Weak charging alternator/generator.
10. Faulty voltage regulator/rectifier ground or overcharging.

Problem with start button.

I suspect the start button. In many bikes the start button deactivates the headlight to provide full power for starting. This continuous load works the button mechanism quite hard.

My push button start switch not working on M/C..

Sounds like a bad relay... the relay switches all power to the solenoid to start the bike... when you let off of the starter it turns the lights etc back on. If the relay goes bad... starter button will not work, and no power to the headlight/taillight/dashlights... the relay is fairly cheep, 10 to 15 bucks....so its a pretty cheap test to see if that is what is wrong.

Yamaha xjr1200 (1997) the problem is that the high/low beam and pass light do not work ,but all other lights do (brake , sidelights , indicators. ) they are bates twin headlights , I have changed the...

Some Yamahas are designed to shut off the headlight while cranking starter to conserve battery power.
I'm not sure your XJ was built that way...but other models have the same problem.......
The starter button has a set of contacts for headlight, and a set of contacts for starter circuit.....as you push in the button, the headlight contacts open first...then as you push further the starter circuit contacts close to crank the starter. If the button does not fully release after starting the headlight stays off. So try WD40 around the button edges and work the button in and out several times with key off, then see if your headlight works now.

My 250 vt 1999 turn key on headlights everything works! when I press start button headlight goes out and bike dosnt start, take finger off start button head light comes back on.

Your starter button is designed to turn the headlight off when pushed in halfway so all the batteries electricity goes to the starter. The starter button is a two position switch. The starter button may be either dirty and need cleaning or is broken and needs to be replaced. If you push the button all the way in do you hear a click? If you hear a click by the battery , then the starter button is good. Follow the positive battery cable to the starter solenoid. With an old screw driver or a piece of wire touch the two terminal posts on the starter solenoid together. If your starter works now you have a bad starter solenoid. If you hold the starter button and lightly tap on the starter with a plastic hammer and the starter works, then you probably need to replace your starter brushes they are worn out.

My cbr 954 rr headlight both high beam and low beam & high beam blue indicator light does not work ! no headlight at all ! taillights blinkers and gauge lights are good! is this just the fuse?

Yes - and there is a fuse for just those items. The other possible cause is a bad starter button. When you push the start button, it does two things: activates the electric starter - and cuts power to the headlight until the button is released. So, if it isn't the fuse, it's probably the start button.

I have no working headlights and the starter won't work

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

On a VT1100, primary suspect would be the START button switch (not the ignition/key switch). The start button switch is actually made up of 2 switches:
  • in normal condition it switches power to the headlight dimmer switch;
  • when starting, power is switch OFF to the headlights to ensure that the starter gets all the power from the battery.
Good luck and thank you for asking FixYa.

I have no working headlights and my bike wont start with the push button but will start and run with a push i checked all fuses and connections i could find all are good any suggestions thank you

Headlights and, starter motors require more amps (power) than the blinkers and, taillights
so: jump your battery before you tear into the wiring
If it still doesn't start or, light up
I'll help you troubleshoot the wiring
