If you will contact me directly at wd4ity@bellsouth.net I'll send you a complete trouble shooting guide to a fuel gauge. It's for Dyna Wide Glide but it should be the same gauge just mounted a bit different. Don't forget to remind me of what you need.

Good Luck

For a 2008 Touring bike with the ignition switch turned to IGNITION the fuel gauge is connected to +12 volts. Current flows through the gauge and the variable resistor in the fuel gauge sending unit to ground. The sending unit float controls the amount of resistance in the variable resistor. Inoperative gauges may be caused by several different circumstances: the sender or fuel gauge may not properly or sufficiently grounded; there may be a malfunction in the sender or in the fuel gauge; there may be a broken or disconnected wire from the ignition switch to the fuel gauge; there may be corroded connections at the fuel gauge.

Test the fuel gauge system by FIRST removing the gauge, THEN ground the fuel gauge sender Y/W wire located at the bottom of the gauge, turn the ignition switch to IGNITION and the fuel gauge must indicate FULL in which case it is functioning correctly in which case set a multimeter to the RXI scale and measure the resistance of the sending unit by placing one probe on (Y/W) and the other probe on the motorcycle ground or bare chassis point as a ground. If the fuel tank is full the reading should be 30-50 ohms while an empty tank should have a 240-260 ohm resistance value and a half full tank will be approximately 125-165 ohms. If a very high resistance or infinity is indicated on the meter, the sender may be "open" or not grounded. Check that the sender and the fuel tank are both grounded by placing one probe of a Multi-Meter on the sender flange and the other probe on the engine crankcase. The meter then must indicate one ohm or less. Replace the sender if one ohm or less was present and if a higher resistance is present, check for a poor connection on the ground wire.

If when the gauge did not indicate FULL when the fuel gauge sender Y/W wire was grounded with the ignition switch at IGNITION check the voltage to the (O/W) (+) and (BK) (-) wires of the fuel gauge connector and a correct reading will be equivalent to battery voltage. If battery voltage is not present check for a broken or disconnected wire. Replace gauge if wiring problem is not foun

95 bmw 525i no dash lights no tach no tremp gauge and fuel gauge pegged way past full

Why was the battery missing to begin with? I would start by checking all fuses under dash and Central hub. Check for burned in-line fuses,if any, coming off of battery cables.

Guages not working,

If all voltages checked ok,then most probably its faulty instrument cluster board on which gauges are connected.Yes if cluster circuit board looks ok,then also it can be faulty.Somewhere there is minute short or burn on board then such prolem arises.
Also check the fuse box.One under hood and other under dash.Inspect each and every fuse and see if all are fine or not.

Fuel Gauge

Most of the time it is the Sending unit in the tank

Dec 27, 2009 | 2000 Kia Sportage

1 Answer

'02 FLHTCI - fuel gauge erratic- keeps pegging on

Sounds like a loose connection to me. On my FXDWG, the gauge has a rubber ring around it that holds it into the fuel tank. Carefully rock the gauge side to side while gently pulling up on it. Do not twist the gauge and be careful not to pull upwards too hard. The wires under the gauge are relatively short. The gauge will be in your hand and the sending unit is in the tank, Check all wires for a good connection.

I don't know of a test for the gauge. We used to test gauges in automobiles by taking the sending unit wire loose and then grounding it. When the wire is loose, the gauge will read full scale in one direction, when the wire is grounded, the gauge will read full scale in the other direction. Testing the sending unit is more difficult as it's basically a rheostat or variable resistor. You would have to remove the unit from the tank. The sending unit has a float on the end of a long crooked rod. It can be a real treat trying to get the sending unit out of the tank without bending the rod. If you bend the rod, the gauge will not read correctly even if everything else is right.

I'd check the wiring connections first. For what it's worth, these gauges are not known for their reliablity and quite often fail. Since your bike is fuel injected, you really need though. Mine doesn't work anymore and I use my trip meter to tell when I need fuel. Between 150 & 200 miles, I look for a gas station.

Erratic fuel gauge 1995 Ford F-350

my friend most of the latest car come's across such problem so it's not the ground wiring problem it's the problem with the fuel gauge unit fitted inside the fuel tank it's time to get replaced it one thing is for sure that part is costly b'cause the fuel gauge is combination of  2 part's the fuel supply pumping motor unit & fuel level indicating gauge unit for such problem see for your nearest FORD authorised service centre across near by so till then drive safe have happy motoring so see you soon my friend..... !

68 camaro aftermarket fuel gauge pegged passed full

Jess, Make sure you don't have the ground and sender level circuits crossed at the gauge. If the needle is pegs to full it indicates an open circuit, if the needle pegs to empty it is indicating a short to ground.
Let me know.
