This sounds like unburned fuel in the system, Have you had any work done on it recently? have you had the bike from new or second hand? Have the fuel system bled right through, failing that, if its a Metal on Metal knock, piston could be coked up too much.

2004 fat boy won't start

First check for spark by using a known good plug and laying it on cylinder head while cranking. Leave the original plugs in. Do NOT remove them for this test. If no spark then either crankshaft position sensor or the ECU or the coil or system relay or fuses or wiring is faulty. If you do not have good electrical knowledge to check these out, bring it to a dealer. If good spark, then fuel must be the problem. Check to see if fuel pump runs for a few seconds when turning bike on. You shoud hear the pump running for a few seconds then stop. If the pump does not run, check system relay and fuel pump fuses. Note - the pump will only run once when turned on/off every few seconds. Bike needs to be off for at least ten seconds for next pump cycle. Check to see if faults codes are stored in ECU memory as these may lead you to the cause.

My 03 Fat boy has a low end clunking with brass in the oil with only 16k mi. Cam bushing or rod bearings?

Hi Anonymous, no compression test required, that noise you are hearing is, with solom reverance, THE DEATH KNOCK sorry.

You have three options: 1. Have a dealer or reputable shop rebuild the engine $3000 to $6000 P&L. 2. Harley has a tade in program your old broken engine for a remanfactured engine of your choice and size $3500 to $4500 P&L. 3. A brand new engine $6000 to $7000 P&L. Personally I like door number 2 Good luck

Battery dead after long ride

Sounds like a charging problem. Charge the battery, then start the bike. Run the rpm's up to 2000 while checking voltage at the battery with a volt meter (dc volts). Voltage should be 13.8-14.2dc volts. If you don't get close to these readings, the charging system isn't working properly.

I have a 2004 honda goldwing 1800 i don't ride it much at all but i start it once a week and let it run. I went to start it to go for a ride today and it had a knocking noise and it stoped so i rode it to...

Hello Gabe,

If the "knocking" noise sounds like it's coming from the lower end, listen to see if it's around the clutch area. My was making a "knocking" noise, only on cold starts, which sounded like the bike was trying to engage into gear. I drained the fluid from the clutch system and refilled with clean DOT 4 brake fluid. This stopped the problem.

Ironically enough, I was having the "ticking" problem too. When I would start my bike, about 30 seconds into warming it up, I heard a ticking noise for 2 -3 seconds of the right side of the bike. The Wing uses a hydraulic Valve and Tappet system which will, eventually, make noise if you run "low grade" fuel in the Wing. Go to your local Wal-Mart, or parts store, and buy a can of Sea Foam. Follow the directions on the bottle for the amount to use with a full tank of fuel (add it to your gas tank, not your crankcase). Fill your tank with Premium fuel and add the Sea Foam. Do this for two fill-ups and this should clean your valves and clear up your noise(s).

NOTE: any fuel with Ethanol in it is NOT good for bikes or cars and will cause buildup on your Valves. Sea Foam ALWAYS works. This is a cheap way to find out if it is just deposits or if you are going to need a mechanic.

What do you set voes on a 1993 flhcu harley davidson

Most people do not set the VOES unit. They simply purchase a new one that is already set by the factory. However, since the FLHCU is a heavy bike, I'd set the VOES at about 5-5.5 inches of vacuum. If the bike spark knocks when you roll on the fuel in high gear, try taking to a bit higher setting like 6-6.5. This will cause the VOES to change state and roll back the timing sooner than the lower setting. Of course, for maximum performance (fuel mileage), you should adjust it lower until you start getting spark knock and then come back up just high enough to prevent it.

Good luck

Bike is making a knocking noise that sounds like

The tappets in your engine are hydraulic and there is no adjustment to them. As the engine warms up and expands, the tappets expand to maintain zero backlash. I've seen the rollers on the end of the tappets go bad and when they do, it sounds like someone with a sledgehammer in the motor. But, I've never seen one go bad at 3000 miles. The earliest I've seen one go bad is 13K miles.

If I had to guess, with only 3000 miles on a 2001 model bike, I'd guess bad gas. Put some fresh gasoline in the tank and make sure that it contains no more than 10% ethanol.

Good Luck

93 fat boy will not continue to run once started and wont restart

sounds like a fuel supply problem it probably has some build up in the fuel system from sitting so much, if it has a screen in the bottom of the tank it could be clogged with sediment from the fuel sitting. or in the filter if it has one could be clogged with old gas or dirt particles. Clean the tank if needed, unhook fuel line at engine and make sure there is flow from the tank. I sometimes blow air through the line back up to the tank to back wash any problems.

good luck
