You would have to buy a service manual for that bike it will tell you all the carb settings in it.

I assume that you have fixed this issue but if not, there is no "bench setting" for the floats. They have to be checked while mounted with fuel tank attached. It gets complicated but if it runs let it warm up, shut it off, place it on center stand. Connect a 12-14 inch clear tube to the small outlet at the very bottom of any one of the carbs and hold the other end above the outside carb(either side). Turn the slotted screw next to it clockwise about half to three quarters of a turn and see how far up the pipe the fuel travels. It should go up to the top of the carb bowl and no higher. The tolerance is about 1/8 of an inch below the top of the bowl. Too high and you flood the carb and dump gas in the piston chamber. Do this with each carb. If the level is too high you need to know how to remove the carbs, pull the bowl from the bottom and adjust SLIGHTLY (means bend) the small tab that the needle valve rests on.If you get the fuel level too low you'll starve the engine when in a deep turn, too high and you are sending gas past the rings into the engine oil.Good luck to all and drain the carbs if you are going to park it for awhile, your bike ran well when it was built so it may not need adjustment, just clean jets and fuel.

Hi, my yamaha maxim 650 will start but will not idle off choke or stay running off it or when i give it alot of gas. could it be the petcock? or the throttle adjustment screw?

Hi, Alexmacy and the usual suspects are:
1. Fuel cap or fuel tank is not venting properly.
2. Fuel filter clogged.
3. Fuel line pinched or kinked.
4. Float needle and seat sticking.
5. Float level too low.
6. Carburetor bowl vent line clogged/blocked/pinched.
7. Idle adjusting screw set too low.
8. Air/fuel mixture screw set too lean.
9. Idle port, transfer ports, slow air jet clogged.
10. Slow fuel jet clogged.
11. Faulty fuel pump.

Just rebuilt the carbs on my 81 650 midnight maxim and it will run great for a while and then the plugs will turn black and quit running. Seems to be getting to much gas and fowling the plugs. Thanks for...

Sounds like either sticking float needles or incorrect float height setting. If you replaced the float needles with after market ones the setting may need altering. Not a Yam expert, so you will need to consult your manual for the correct height.
