Question about 1986 Honda GL 1200 Aspencade Gold Wing

We had a reed valve leak which caused a problem with the idle. This was fixed by the mechanic, but, as he describes, the idle seems as though it is not running on all four cylinders, only on three. It runs find once under power and driving on the street. Any help?

I drove a Goldwing home from a dealer that ran terribly. It was a $350 motorcycle, they just wanted gone. All it needed was four new spark plug caps , about $5 each. After 10 years I still drive it 600 miles to Sturgis,SD. Always try the cheap stuff first. Don't forget to put in new plugs at the same time.

You are basically describing a vacuum leak that is causing high RPM.If you want to fix the problem look for a vauum hose that has disconnected go aroung at the PCV valve and check for vacuum leaks that are causing high RPM

I have a 2hp twin tank IR compressor It will not fill more than about 20psi. And there is a spring loaded pressure cable on the outlet side of the head that doesn't close sir leaks from here as long...


From your description, it sounds like your problem is in the cylinder head(s). The fact that the air leak stops as soon as the compressor stops rules out the check valve at the tank. You will have to remove the head(s) and physically inspect the reed valves. Even one broken reed valve on the exhaust side can cause the air to be "cycled" inside the head, therefore not allowing it to go to the tank. I hope this is helpful to solving he problem. Trying to fix 82 xr250 it has sat for a while checked spark has good spark removed carb cleaned jets and passages air cut off valve diaphram is in poor condition when trying to start it will backfire loud...


if the diaphram is in poor condition as you say, it will need a new one.
if there is an air leak though the diaphram it can cause the symptoms you describe

Ruff idle(new plugs installed) runs great


rough idling can be caused by dirty air filter.dirty throttle valve and bore.vacuum leak at egr valve and pvc valve.also idling too low.will cause rough idling.

Wont start by kick start but will by pull start


sounds like your idle jet is clogged, remove your carb and clean idle jet cause it won't idle or kick start without it...good luck to you friend...Tim

1987 bmw 325 idles rough


On the 325 series I have worked on (your year, make, model), I have found that idling issues like you describe are the result of a defective oxygen sensor. Replace the oxygen sensor with a Bosch unit. That should take care of your issue.

Idle fluctuates


Its could be a few things. Most likely cause is you IAC (Idle air control valve) If this valve gets clogged up with carbon it will cause a idle surge on cold starts like you are describing.

Next your FITV (fast idle thermal valve). When the hot wax inside of this valve starts to wear it will cause a idle surge on cold starts.

HOMELITE 330


The Homelite 330 has a set of "reed valves" (thin fiberglass flaps held in a V shaped holder, narro end of the V point to the engine) in between the carburetor and the intake port of the cylinder.

then look at part #26 on page 218.

basically it does:

Airflow Reed Valve engine

Their function is to open slightly when the air is rushing through them toward the engine, and yet flap closed again to stop the backflow or air/fuel from going out of the cylinder. The sucking action of the engine lets the air slightly move the reed off of the small part of the "V" and the air flows in. As the airflow is reduced the mechanical tension of the reed, trying to remain flat and not bent, closes it.

Since they are flaps there is a momentary time then the air will rush out as they close. But you not should see "lots" of fuel coming out of the carburetor.

Two symptoms will cause excess fuel/air rushing out of the carb.
1. if they are old the reeds can be slightly warped and just not seal against the reed valve cage. That means replacing the reeds (if servicable) or the reed valve (cage and reeds together).
2. If any dirt or sawdust ever got into the engine, there could be some particles stuck between the reed valve and the cage. This is usually near the top of the reed valve and once it's in there, it can't get out. You can sometimes tage out the reed valve cage, remove the reeds and clean everything. The foam seal around the perimeter if the black top cover of the Homelite 330 usually breaks down over time and lets dirt/fine sawdust into the "Clean side" of the air system. You should see no dirt/sawdust or debrea around the carburetor.

In either event you would want to make sure that when you are lookin at the part that the reeds are perfectly seated on the reed valve cage. If not, you get the symptoms that you described.

1995 ford escort idle problem


Hi , i have a 1995 Escort with 1.9 4 cyl engine , at cold start the engine revs ok but as it get warmer it start to idle rought and die , with a scantool the o2 sensor always reed lean at idle , after checking fuel pressure , air mass meter , EGR valve , and potential vacuum leak at intake and hoses , its the PCV valve that give me that problem , as i remove the pipe with the valve there was a whissle noise comming from it , when i block the valve at its tip the whissle noise stop the engine revs smooter and the o2 reads normal , i replace the PCV and its idling good .
