Have you checked the tension on the primary chain lately? Take the oval shaped inspection cover off the the primary cover on the right side of the bike. Check the tension on the top run of the primary chain in the middle of the run. You should have between 5/8" (15.8mm) to 7/8" (19.0mm) with the engine COLD. To adjust loosen the nut that holds the primary chain shoe in place and raise the plate to tighten the chain, lower it to loosen. Since working through the inspection cover hole is tedious, some people elect to take the outer primary cover off and then set the tension. Refill the primay with 36 to 42 ounces of the appropiate oil. Harly uses H-D Syn3 20W50 synthetic engine oil in the primary.

If the noise seems to be coming from the right hand side of the engine, it could be the cam chain tensioner and shoe. To repair this requires going into the cam chest. This is something that I do not recommend for the amateur mechanic. There are also some special tools required to work in this area.

I hope this helps
Good Luck
Steve

Fluctuating cold idle - 2008 Road Glide

Try this:
Turn kill switch to ON/RUN position.Cycle the ignition(key) switch 4 times (each time long enough for engine light to go out ~15 seconds).
This resets the "zero" position of the Throttle for the ECM.

Engine light on only idle

Check your electrical system. It would seem as if your alternator isn't charging correctly. You should be getting approx 14 volts at the battery with the engine running.

Valve adjustments on a 2008 streetglide

Hi Anonymous, this models valves are non adjustable but you have 3 options, 1. with engine at operating temperature do a quick series of 5 throttle revs to 1000 RPM'S below red line. 2. Try an engine oil additive Liquid Molly Tappet Stop Noise or Risoline Engine Treatment. 3. Buy new lifters and a set of adjustable pushrods. Good luck

Why is check engine light on when my 2001 electra glide std. is carburated?

Although your engine is carburated, it still has an ECM. The engine gets it's timing pulses from a crank position sensor on the left side of the engine. It also has a MAP sensor and several other sensors.

I have a 2008 ultra classic all of a suden when you start it idle is high 20 thosand rpm any thing i can try befor . thaking it to the dealer. thanks rick e.

20 thousand rpm? I don't think so. Obviously you're reading the tachometer wrong. It may be idling at 2000 rpm. I agree that this cold start fast idle is a bit high for me as well. You have no choice but to take it to a dealer or an independent dealer that can change the setting in the fuel control computer for the cold start fast idle speed. There is nothing that is "user controllable" on the late model's fuel control system. Sorry.

Good Luck

I have a 01 ultra classic with a rattling sound coming from the lower left side of the engine. was told I might need to adjust the primary chain or the timing chain. any hints on what to check?

Does the sound come even when the bike is stalled and you accelerate it? If yes, then it must be timing chain and in case the noise comes only when the bike is moving, it must be the primary chain.

Engine noise

If you dd not torque the front sprocket down correctly you could have an issue. If this is a new noise then be concerned, if this has progressed over time, then it is more than likely just the bike loosening up. Which is normal...but loud, could this be pre-detonation, did you make the correct adjustments to your MAP? Check you push rod adjustment with the bike cold, I mean Artic overnight not running cold.

Noise in engine at 2000rpm

could be a few things.... check you primary chain tension, if thats not it check cam chain shoes and tension.and finally if that isnt it check your stator bolt.Mine came loose and it made noise untill it came out then it sounded like major problem at all rpm's.I was relieved to find out it was just the stator bolt.thought the bottom end let loose....Anyhow i hope one of these is the cure. You didnt say if it was comming from top or bottom... good luck!
