Hi, the problem you are having is going to be one of 2 things now the most likely cause is going to be the brake light switch, to locate this you need to get on your hands and knees and have a really close up look of the brake pedal, then if you follow the brake pedal to where it goes through the bulk head into the engine you should then see the switch its located at the back of the brake pedal at the top, now you can take the switch off and press the button with your finger to test the brake lights if they work fit the switch and try and move it so the switch is pressed with the brake pedal you can sometimes pack the brake pedal out with tape at the part that presses the brake light switch. if the switch dont work when you press it by hand then the switch needs replacing.

the second problem you could have is if water or damp has got into the back lights you can sometimes find that the circuit board corrodes that the bulbs fit into so all you need to do is remove the back lights and remove any corrosion and this should then get the lights working

1997 Jeep grand cherokee

Sounds like your brake light switch needs to be replaced.  It is attached to the brake pedal and should cost you around $20 from an auto parts store.  If the fuses and bulbs are good there is a 99% chance it is the brake light switch.  Hope this helps!  Thanks for an honest rating and for using FixYa.

I have a 1999 jeep grand cherokee and the brake lights wont work

there's a possibility that it might be the socket that the bulb actually goes into. my break light did something similar to that. the socket only cost about 8 bucks from the dealer.

1993 jeep grand cherokee limited no running lights/tail lights.

Id look at the headlight switch and do some voltage tests to see whats coming out of there. Pay close attention to any wires which look like someone was in there already.People can mess stuff up faster and better than the vehicle can by itself!
