Sounds like a bent shift fork or two. Replacing the bad shift forks is major surgery and is NOT recommended for the inexperienced mechanic. Several special tools are needed. The top end and gearbox get totally torn down just to get to the shift forks. This is a very expensive repair, guessing $2100 or so at the dealers. Bummer. Contact a few dealers to cofirm my view of the problem and the probable repair cost. The shift forks move left and right as the shift drum is rotated when you lift or push down on the shift pedal.

Your neutral safety switch is bad.
  • Neutral safety switch sends a signal to the on-board computer to allow the engine to start and to engage the transmission
  • When not replaced, vehicle may experience no start and/or transmission will not shift out of park, here's the part.

How to drive?

you can ride the cluthch on a bike un like a car you wont hurt it its oil lubricated constantly, sitting on the bike pull the clutch in with your left hand and click the left foot lever down in to 1st, then learn how to click it back up 1 half movement in to neutral. the neutral light will come on sfter the bike enters neutral. in first gear give the throttle on the right hand a squeeze and pull the clutch in with your left hand put foot gear selector down in to 1 st and begin to release clutch slowly. hold on as bike will engage may be jerky balance yourself! when you get moving stop! by pulling the clutch in and the hand brake as you close the throttle to stop! practice your take off many times some where safe! when you get your balance in 1st gear pick up speed and begin shifting the foot gear selector up in to 2nd gear and practice closing the throttle and breaking to a safe stop. gears are generslly 1st down 1 click 2345 and6th all up from there and neutral is 1 half a click up from 1st between 2nd gear. And dont put it in gear with the kick stand down t may stall on you

hope this helps

Got a new 2009 Honda Shadow Spirit VT750 C2. When I'm taking off and shift from 1st into 2nd it always stops at neutral first instead of going right into 2nd. It also does this when downshifting. Sometimes...

in the gearbox theres a disc which the pedal is coupled to.now the gear selectors have pegs which engage with slots in the disc,so the spring loaded plunger which holds the disc when in each gear.spring may have broken, the pegs may be worn or broken, the gearbox needs dismantling to fix

Shifts hard into 1st. When stopped hard to find neutral

hello and welcome
this is most likely caused from a wearing clutch. when the clutch is held in there are a series of clutch plates that seperate. and allow ease of drive force from the main shaft to the counter shaft. but if the plates get worn they tend to not disengage as well. and the gears do not engage as easily and finding neutral can be hard to find or impossible to do sometimes.
to fix this the clutch plates both the fibers and steels need to be inspected for warpage. im sure you will find the fault there. thank you.
