Your carbs main jet is most likely blocked. When the throttle goes off the idle jet to the main jet there isnt enough fuel flow and the engine stalls.

You need to removed the main jet and run a small piece of wire through the main jet to clear it. This is a good time to look at the inside of the float bowl to see if you have excessive water, rust or dirt accumulating that is a sign you should clean and drain the fuel tank and lines as well. The main jet is actually the bolt that holds the fuel bowl on the bottom of the carb! You need to look very close at the jet near the top of the threads to see the little whole there and clean it. A wire brush to clean off the threads and fine piece of wire strand to clean the hole will do the trick!

If you dont have a bowl type carb you will need to remove the carb from the fuel tank and locate and clean the inlet screen and main jet and then remove the fuel tank and clean it out too.

Good luck and be careful.

your hint was helpful but i have done that but it still runs at half throttle

  • john andrew manchook Jul 19, 2010

Did you find the little tiny jet opening at the top of the threads?

Have you drained fuel out completely and checked for water?

Could you give me the mowers make and model so I can see the schematics of the carb too?

We will get to the bottom of this! :-)

I see this type of carb has a huge plastic jet. This breakdown shows all the major parts and their function.

I would put the mower at part choke where it runs the higher throttle setting and see if you have a vacuum leak somewhere.

You can just spray a little WD at the base of the carb where it meets the tank and see if the unit bogs or throttle up.

Sir, what is the starting adjustments on a Poluan 2000 Carb

Typical for any carburetor is 1 1/4 to 1 1/2 turns (out). These are just rough settings to get the saw running. Remove chain, turn idle throttle speed screw in to increase idle rpms so its less likely to stall. Follow mfg instructions for starting.

Once running, adjust low speed mix and allow a couple minutes to warm. Then re-adjust low speed and lower idle rpms by turning out idle throttle speed screw. Then with throttle wide open adjust high speed mix. If saw hesitates from idle to full throttle, open low speed mix 1/8 turn and readjust high speed mix.

If saw doesn't fire in 3 or 4 pulls remove plug. If plug is dry no fuel, if wet either no spark or idle mix to rich (or fuel metering may be fouled).

When youtry to speed up trac tor stalls out

if your saying that engine idles ok but anything over idle stall out your problem is a clogged carburator , try running some carb cleaner thru it , but most the time i end up dissasembling it and cleaning it !! if your saying that at full throttle the engine stalls out , your pushing the throttle up to far and it's going to cold start posisition (choke)

1987 60 hp mariner idle & high idle great, stumbles/ stalls in gear on take off, head gasket or poor idle adjustment?

Clogged idle circuits in your carbs. Clean jets and passages.
You can try suck dirt out, therefore: Screw the idle mixture screw out ( almost totally ), give full throttle ( 1 second ) and then hold your hand against the carb air intake.
This will give maximum suction and can suck the dirt trough tje circuits.
Also, first drain the carb(s) to be shure there is no water in it...

Vanguard V Twin 18 hp. monted in Cushman Motor scooter, runs great at W.O.T and at on quarter throttle, misses at range inbetween

Sounds like your carb needs the fuel/air mix adjusted..uses all the gas at high speed but has excess at low speeds...find your adjusting screw and at med throttle slowly screw it clockwise until the engine starts to sputter then back it out until it starts to sputter again then continue to do this until you reach ideal mix where it runs the best it can..then go slowly through the throttle up and down..when set..unjust your idle speed screw to your ideal idle speed..if this dies not fix ..carb will bed cleaned or rebuilt. Good luck.. Note always push or pull your throttle handle slowly to position avoids gas load up causing sputter and backfire.

Rode for 120 kilometers pulled over and filled gas tank soon after smiled gas. Seemed to run fine. Next day rode for about 50 km but sounded really rough at high speeds around 120km. Pulled over to park in...

I would suspect that the float is sticking. Checking will require removal of (in order): seat, tank, air filter box/backing plate, and finally, the float bowl at the bottom of the carb. Insure that the float is not flooded, and that the float needle is free of trash.

2002 durango has recently started to stall after it has been filled up. today it would not stay running unless foot was on the gas at all times

try this.
Here is the common cause of surges, stalls at stops, slow idle speed, erratic idle speed, rough idle and engine hesitation (and other problems), it is in most cases the idle speed control air-bypass valve and or throttle valve and upper intake, these area's get full of gunk and combustion residue over the miles and cause idle issues (stalls, low idle) like yours, Get a can of intake cleaner from any local parts store, not carb spray, intake cleaner, it is made by a company called CRC, remove the air intake hose to the engine, hold the idle high so the engine won't stall, then spray the can of cleaner into the intake while keeping the engine running, use at least 1/2 the can, shut down the engine and disconnect the battery for 5 minutes, then restart and complete a number of mixed driving cycles, town, freeway, stop and go etc., after a few days the problem will go away as the system will relearn to the clean intake.

Briggs & Stratton Quattro lawn mower engine. Runs rich and unevenly. Suspect carb and have used sprey carb cleaner. Any suggestions??

A lot of time when the small motors on these push mowers surge it is a governing spring that is weak or broke. It does not hold enough tension and causes the valve to fluctuate. I have fixed this many time for a relatively cheap amount (under $5).
