Question about 1990 Yamaha Xv 250 Virago S

1 Answer

I aquired an 83 750 midnight virago that sat for 5 years and has only 8000 miles on it. I removed carbs and had them cleaned at a very reputable shop. I reinstalled them and the bike would start and run fine for maybe 2 or 3 minutes then lose the front cylinder so i replaced the coil now its much better. Sometimes it starts and runs great and i take off and ride 2 or 3 miles and everything is cool but other times it will act up and barely idle when i am out with it, sometimes when i start it it will idle but no acceleration just standing there. I also have had an intermittant problem i saw posted and that is i put it in gear and it kills. I wonder if that is connected as i dont think its fuel but electrical?

If it stops when put in gear it could be the side stand switch, If this switch is dodgy it could cause intermittant problems.
but this doesnt fully explain the no acceleration problem

Probably would not be a bad ideal to have your Kawasaki shop take a look at this motorcycle. With only 77 miles on it, you don't want to risk damaging the motorcycle. There are really limited options for the backyard mechanic in these kinds of problems. The $ you spend will be well worth it.

Hi, Johndunnifa and the usual suspects are:

6. Carburetor bowl vent line clogged/blocked/pinched.

Bike has sat up for a year or so,wont start, cranks fine, has spark, maybe bad fuel ?

If no fuel stabilizer was added while the bike sat for a year or so.
It is most likely bad fuel with gum deposits.
This can can create some problematic symptoms for you.

It is vital the bad fuel to be cleared from tank/lines and carbs.
You may need the fuel system cleaned as the gum deposits can cause major headaches in the carbs and jets. If the system is not cleaned and even after you get the bike running, you could be miles away and have the fuel fowl jets/injectors, causing shut down.

Check the spark plugs carefully. Oil on the plugs may just need cleaning. Once you get the bike running the oil should burn off if the rings are still in good shape.

Motor needs clean Air, Clean Gas and a hot spark.

Good luck!

04 yamaha virago with 800 miles has dead spot when you first get

You have a varnish buildup in the carb(s). Remove and clean with spray carb cleaner. If needed, remove the slide from the throat of the carb then move the jet needle clip one notch lower. This will richen the low speed fuel mix.
