Question about 2001 Harley Davidson XL 1200 C Sportster Custom

1 Answer

Ok my hubby has an 01 1200 Sportster. He is trying to get the signal light to flash. Either way he hooks the two wires, it either stays on or when it flashes the headlight also flashes. Anyone got ANY idea on how to fix this problem before he goes nuts. LOL. Thanks.

Both front turn signals stay on with headlight

Hi Anonymous, are you sure they are not the running lights? If you know for a fact they are the turn signals staying on then get out your test light and look for a short to a power source, also check the connection at the turn signal module wiring harness for coroded, broken or loose pins. If everything checks out ok replace the turn signal module and for a free wiring diagram please visit the website below and good luck. Harley Davidson Wiring Diagrams and Schematics

I am trying to replace the rear turn signal on my 2001 Sportster. The signal that is on it now has a blue and a black wire. The new one only has a black wire. How do I make this work?

Before you take anything off or hook anything up, take the bulbs out of both turn signals. Look at the base of the bulbs and see if there are two or only one connections. I'm thinking you bike has rear running lights and the turn signal unit you are trying to replace it with only has the turn signal capability. Before you connect any wires, make sure the black and the blue wire on the bike are not touching anything metal. Turn the turn signal on and see which wire is hot. It probably won't flash but it'll go "hot" when you press the turn signal button. If they both only have one filament in the bulb, one connector on the base, then wire the blue wire on the bike to the black wire coming out of the turn signal. This would be my guess as the ground for the turn signal is a physical ground. If it doesn't work, try to connect the black wire to the turn signal body to make sure it's got a good ground. Now, there is the possibility that the turn signal will not work at all. Your bike is equipped with the automatic turn signal cancelling unit and they are very picky. It may sense the mismatch in the parts and not work at all.

Good Luck

Replacing signal lights on a 1992 sportster that has 2 wires on the original lighting to a bullet style turn signal that has 3 wires.

The two wire system is for a turn signal only unit. The three wire unit has a turn signal and a running light in it. Remove the turn signal lense and you'll probably see a dual filament bulb. The two wire system is shown as an "International" wired model according to my book. One wire is the "hot" wire (Brown) and the other is a ground or earth wire (black) on the bike. On the turn signal unit, probably all wires are black. You can use a VOM to determine which wire is the ground wire or you can just try hooking them up in different ways until you find one that works.

03 harley sportster, hooked up new led turn signals on bike, when motor not running they work fine, start the bike and they flash about 3 times and stays on. anybody got the same problem?

The load on the LED lamps is too low for the turn signal control box. there is an equilizer box available you have to put in line with the signals to get the load back to where it needs to be.
In it's current condition it beleives a light is burnt out.
you can get the device at your local dealer or on line .
