Question about 2004 Yamaha YZ 450 F

I have changed the the clutch cable and clutch basket on a YZ450F and still can't seemed to get enough pull on the clutch for it to dis-engage.

Disconnect the cable at the engine. Does the cable move freely when disconnected? If it does, remove the left side cover then check the operation of the clutch arm. Does it move freely and spring back freely? If not then clean it up. If it does move freely, remove the clutch push rod from the center case. Roll it on a flat surface. Does it roll smoothly or does it sort of lope along. If bent, replace it. If rolling smoothly then put it back in the center-case and remount the side casing. Lube the clutch cable and remount it also. The adjuster #23 should be screwed in until it is snug then back off the screw 1/4 turn.

Assuming no one has tinkered with the actual clutch and it was operating properly a few months ago or when it was put up for the winter, now is the time for an oil change. Dirty, gritty oil can stiffen a clutch big time. Drain the oil and refill with 10w40 motor oil. No synthetics or oils with "special" additives or friction reducers. No oil marked ECII. Just normal motor oil. Shell, Mobil, Pennzoil, etc., the major brands. Ride the bike for an hour or so then change the oil again. Doing this will flush most all of the grit from the gearbox. Hey, oil ain't that expensive. This should take care of the problem.

The bearing for the clutch outer drum may be worn. The adjustment on the handlebars is to set lever free play(about 1/2 inch) before the cable becomes tight and operates the clutch release inside. Make sure the outer drum cover is tight--check with the clutch lever to make sure the plate releases the disks and plates.

Bike is not idling, wants to keep creeping while clutch is in and brake is on, had hard time today going into neutral


You're clutch cable needs to be adjusted. Most likely you can gain enough "pull" up at the hand lever. The adjustment will be turned clock wise, your goal is to imagine you're pulling the inside cable more-farther to dis engage the engine from the wheel. You should have a little play when the lever is at rest to be absolutely sure it's completely free. Might be worth a couple bucks to have a shop do it and ask to watch. It's a quick, easy adjustment but should have an experienced hand.

engaging?
you meant dis-engage im sure.
pedal up is engaged,
pedal at floor dis-engages it.
my guess, is the clutch drags unless i push the clutch pedal 100%
to the floor.
1: bad cable is 90% cause. non last this long.
2: no free play is way too loose.
3: broken lever on the pedal top. caused by #1

The first thing to check is the clutch release mechanism for faults. If a cable check that the clutch operates fully from dis-engaged to engaged as if the pressure plate is held 1/2 off then the clutch will slip. If hydraulic the same fault will be from a master cylinder that has a blockage in the compensating port. It is cheaper to fix the operating bits before pulling out the gear box because normally if a clutch is worn out or the pressure plate is broken you will go nowhere regardless.

Make sure you properly adjust the new cable so that it has the proper amount of play - that you don't have it too tight (no engine engaging) or too loose (engine won't disengage).

could be a few different things,But always start with the small( inexpensive )first and work your way up...#1 check your clutch cable adjustment to be sure its engaging and disengaging properly(clutch cables stretch over time and need replaced or adjusted)...but if you have never done any clutch work to the bike(and you ride it like i do mine) #2. it probably needs new clutch plates and #3 maybe clutch basket from your description of the problem. the clutch plate fibers wear down over time(they are like brake pads and wear out).and the plates wear groves in the clutch basket and interfear with the plate movement...hopefully its just your cable..hope this helps..

No idea what type of bike you have however, is the clutch lever pulling the cable against any tension, if no, it may just be the cable. Follow cable to engine and see if it actuates the clutch actuating arm or spindle. If lever operates okay and actuates clutch actuating arm, returning when released, your problem lies within. Warm engine and drain oil, remove clutch cover (careful of gasket and dowels) and inspect function of actuating arm against clutch thrust rod. If this is okay, your clutch basket may be undone on the spline, or the idler cog that drives the clutch basket is faulty.
More info on model required for any further diagnosis.

I have a wet clutch an it wont engage the cable broke and the main shaft for the clutch on the inside is loose and moves aroundand i have a 2002 but on the web site it only has 2003 so i put that


I think you mean that the clutch has a broken cable and it is constantly engaged. The clutch dis-engages from the gear box when the clutch lever is pulled in. The push lever axle (I think this is what you are calling the main shaft) sits in a hole on the side cover. The gear on the axle engages the push rod and the push rod separates the clutch plates by pushing on the pressure plate to dis -engage the transmission. If the axle shaft is loose, check the lock bolt. Also check the cover plate. Is the casing cracked or broken at the mounting point?

If you are calling the push rod "the main shaft", then some movement is normal when the clutch is engaged as would happen with a broken cable. Please rate my answer. Thanks.
