Hi,
you may found that the actual hydraulic fluid is too old and needs replacing or check that the piston in the lever part is not jammed .
Some times thick oil does the clutch to jam too .

I have a 1998 Dodge Dakota 3.9 with a 5 speed. I am having difficulties with the clutch and am trying to figure out if it is the clutch needing replaced or if it is the hydraulics.


Bad hydraulics (leaking/spongy) and worn out clutch have opposite symptoms. If the clutch does NOT ENGAGE - get the vehicle moving - you probably need to replace the clutch and/or pressure plate.
If the clutch does NOT DISENGAGE - you can't get the transmission into gear, or there is difficulty or grinding when trying to shift between gears - your hydraulic system is not moving the clutch release arm far enough to disengage the clutch.

its a hydraulic clutch. the burning smell could be a sign that the fluid in the master cylinder is low and there isn't enough pressure being applied to the flywheel, causing the clutch to slip. if the clutch disengages at near the end of the pedals "throw", as you disengage the pedal, than its a sign your clutch plate needs to be replaced. but to me it just sounds like a hydraulic pressure issue.

You either have a hydraulic clutch system or cable. What probably happened is your hydraulic system failed. You either have a separate reservoir for the clutch master cylinder or it shares the brake reservoir. Check under the hood next to you brake master, Too difficult to answer without more info on year, make and model.

Crunching when changing gears on a pajero


check the oil level of the gearbox, if level is low or oil is too thin will cause it to crunch. put an 80w90 gear oil into it if needs fill or change/ also check the clutch is fully disengaged. maybe clutch hydraulics have air in the system, this will reduce the travel of the clutch fork and not fully disengage the clutch. to see if its the clutch hydraulics select 1st gear push in the clutch and start the engine, if it starts to creep forward check out the hydraulics. if all this ok, prob be the synchro rings internal in the gearbox

1. Clutch not properly adjusted.
2. Clutch plates rusted together.
3. Hydraulic clutch needs bleeding.
4. Faulty clutch slave cylinder.
5. Faulty clutch ramp mechanism.
6. Broken clutch rod
7. Clutch pack loose on the main shaft.

I have a 94 saturn sc2 that seem like the clutch is not fully disengaging. Is there any reason for this other than the clutch no good?


depending on whether the clutch is cable or hydraulic, the issue could be in the linkage (if cable), and you may have to adjust the cable so that when the pedal is on the floor the clutch is fully disengaged..if hydraulic, try bleeding the clutch cylinder. if that doesn't solve the problem, then you may have a leak in the line leading to the clutch

You are in the wrong section of FixYa, but I can help you.
The reason why you are having trouble changing gears is your clutch is not disengaging properly from the engine when you press the clutch peddle.
If the clutch is a cable type control, then the clutch cable and clutch lever may need adjusting to disengage the gearbox from the engine so you can change gears without crunching the gears.
If the clutch is hydraulic type, you could have air in the system or you have leaky hydraulic seals, both of which will prevent the clutch from disengaging from the engine properly. Check the clutch master cylinder and the clutch slave cylinder for leaks. If there are leaks you need to replace the seals and if the master and slave cylinders are badly scored then they need to be replaced as well.
If there are no hydraulic leaks then bleed the hydraulic line to remove the air in the hydraulic system, you may also need to adjust the push rod from the slave cylinder to adjust the clutch lever arm so when the clutch peddle is depressed the clutch fully disengages the engine.

The clutch fluid is leaking on my truck and it won't go into gear right.


You need to fix the Leak in your hydraulic system to your clutch on your transmission. The reason that your transmission is not going  in to gear right is that the fluid is to low to push the throw out bearing to disengage the clutch fully. 
Once the fluid get's too low, you'll not be able to disengage the clutch to put it in to gear or change gear.
Check the fluid level to your hydraulic clutch reservoir and fill to the right level and fix the leak in the hydraulic lines.

Clutch not fully disengaging


You have either air in your hydraulics which you need to bleed or else the clutch plates are worn/warped....here is the repair manual....
