Check the engine compreshion,,is it low??????
check the air filter is clear the engine needs to breath,,,
check your getting full throtol,,,silly i know,,but?
check that the carb is not flooding and that no jets are blocked up,
check there is a good flow of fule from the fule tank to the carb,
check the ingition timing is spot on,,if its out ,,,fix it!
change the spark plug,, for the right plug!
check that nothing is draging,,like brakes! or slipping like clutch?
if the gear box it partly sezed up,,its going to be hard to turn the rear wheel when in gear with the clutch pulled in,,,
hope this is of help to you...

Testimonial: "Hey thanks mike your a smart dude! I did notice however after draining the crank case and gear box of its old oil I refilled it with new oil... Anyway I put it in gear and and pulled in the clutch it was a little tough to move the rear wheel so does this mean i have a seized gear or the clutch just might need to be adjusted. I really was hoping it wasn't gonna be this problem its like the last thing i really wanna work on with this bike but i think this is prolly the problem..."

    hi its mike 756

this still sounds like fule shortage,,,wrong jets in carb,,ie:wrong size for this engine,,check that this carb is right size for this motor if its to small it may run good without a load on the motor but it cant pull the air and fule it needs to breath when under load

    hi its mike756 again

if the rear wheel was hard to turn when in gear and the clutch pulled in the clutch may be draging,,,,,

look at the clutch to see if there is a lot of slack on it if there is take up a bit on the clutch adjuster first but leave a little slack or the clutch will start to slip when the motor gets hot,,,

the rear wheel should turn fairly freely in gear with the clutch pulled in ,,if it dont check the wheel bearings and the drive chain if there tight or stiff to turn you just found the problem, a worn out drive chain will soke up power up to 40% if its realy bad and a partly sezed wheel bearing will do the same thing check all the wheel bearings! try it in all gears as well not just first try it in top as well

if its still realy tight start thinking of striping the gear box down,,but look at the clutch drive train first it could still be that part sezed up

Try cleaning the fuel filter, it may be as simple as that

Posted on Jul 12, 2010

Testimonial: "That might be a simple answer for my problem but the person who gave it to me put a new carb and all new lines and i'm pretty sure a new fuel filter.. The bike sounds great when in neutral and will revv and run like a race ready bike and has no problem starting it only runs like **** when in gear and will not run good enough to get out of 3rd gear..."

2007 ATK dirt bike no spark

Hi, Ken and the usual suspects are:
1. Fouled spark plugs.
2. Severely discharged or a damaged battery, should have 12.5 volts or better and be able to pass a load test if necessary.
3. Check battery terminals for damage or corrosion, check the battery cables at "BOTH" ends for loose, corroded, or broken connectors, "INSIDE" and outside the cable harness, perform connector wiggle test and check cables with an ohmmeter if necessary.
4. Loose connection at ignition coil or plug between ignition sensor and CDI box.
5. Spark plug cables in bad condition, shorting / leaking, spark plug cable connections loose, check for spark leakage in the dark.
6. Faulty ignition coil, pick up coil, trigger coil or CDI box testing needs to be checked with an ohmmeter at 70 degrees Fahrenheit
7. Faulty safety switches clutch, kickstand, neutral, off/on etc.
8. Faulty ignition switch.

Who to go ingine rebuild

and have done more working on the bike than riding the bike. Unfortunately I'm back in that position again of the bike not running after getting it running last fall then overheated and wouldn't start again. I think that I'm going to spend the money to have someone go through my 450 mx and rebuild and update some of the internals. Was thinking of just bringing the entire bike to someone and that way I know it would be ready to go when I picked it up. The bike is in Boise (would be pretty easy to get it to ATK), but am working in Seattle area during the week right now for a while longer. What are the options on this and who would you recommend? ,Since you are in Idaho I would recommend Blackwidow. They are a site sponser. ,,,

Need help bike died while riding

everything working perfect. Wednesday night i was riding home from work and got about halfway home bike had a small bog while coming up for a turn onto another street pulled in the clutch and stall. Rolled to a stop and fired the magic button. The motor would turn over and act like it wanted to run (had to give a small amount of throttle) for about 2-3 seconds and then would die. Did this about 5 times and the typical dead or low batter clicking occured. Got the bike home and it has been on the tender for the last 2 days and i just put some time in on the bike and sure enough bike will turn over although kida sputtering and making slight backfire sounds (almost as if timing is off) and will run for about 2-3 seconds and dies. I can do this about 4-5 times and the infamous clicking starts to happen again. Now my bike has never been a cold start bike, i always have to give it a bit of throttle when its cold to keep it running, but once it warms up runs like a champ...or atleast it used to. Its a fairly new battery and has been kept on the tender when the bike is not used for a few days. Now the other thing that bothers me is it seems that oil may be seeping out from where the head and the case meet, but very little. The motor does have a slight coating of oil around the gasket area. I did send the motor to ATK back in late 04 or 05 and had the reliability and upgrade done to it but have only about 500 total miles on it since then, with about 400 of those in the last coulple of months. ,Even with a good bike battery 4-5 tries is about all they have.So forget about the battery and go with basics fuel, compression and spark. Also sounds like you need some mapping help, you should never have to touch the throttle when starting. The will run perfect if they are tuned. Do you know what map is in it? Did ATK also change the ECU to a .atj map?,,,
