Question about 2006 Harley Davidson FXDBI Street Bob
If I understand that when you turn your switch to the "on" position, the engine starts up? If so, your starter is hung up and this isn't good. This means your starter is running all the time and that is not conducive for long starter life.
If the bike is still under warranty, take it to a dealer immediately. If not, there are several things that could be causing this problem.
You'll need either a test light or a digital volt ohm meter to test where the problem is. Look at the end of your starter from the right side of the bike. You'll see a plate shaped roughly like a pentagon (five sided) on the end with a single wire connector just above it. Unplug the connector. Insert the test light or the red probe of your meter into the wire end of the connector, not the starter part of the connector. Connect the wire from the test light or the black probe of the meter to a good ground. If using a meter, put the meter in DC voltage, 20 volt or higher range. Now, turn your switch on.
If the starter engages and starts the engine, your problem is a mechanical problem with the starter itself. If the does not engage but your test light or DVOM shows voltage on the wire, you have an electrical problem in the starter circuit. In this latter case, I'd suspect a bad starter relay. Once you determine where the problem is, repost and we can go from there.
