Question about 1988 Honda GL 1500 Gold Wing
The gears on my 1988 Goldwing is whining when I cruise at 120-130km/hr. They also crunch when I put them through although the clutch seems to be OK. The bike has been converted into a trike but has not done high mileage if you can believe the odometer.

Hi, Ansyco I would love to help you with your engine or chassis noise but I just loaned my brand new pair of listening ears to your local dealer's chief technician so he could take your bike for a test ride and give you his professional opinion and estimate about your noise and repair cost. If you are a little short on "DRACHMA" and a Dealership is not on your list of fun places to visit then perhaps the list below will help soothe your worried mind so you can make an informed decision.

take some wd 40 & spray around the carb boot while running to see if the idle drops for a few seconds. sounds like you have an intake side air leak causing a lean condition making the motor rev high.

SOURCE: Bike shuts off when in gear
hello and welcome
it seems that you may have a faulty side stand switch. the side stand needs to be in the up position before the bike can be started off in gear. but if not the side stand contains a saftety switch that shuts the bike off when put into gear. to verify this you can check for spark when the bike is being turned over in gear with the clutch held in.
there should be two wires associated with this switch. a green, and green with white. so when the stand is up these two wires are connected, and the switch can be tested as such. thank you.
