Question about 2000 Harley Davidson FXDWG Dyna Wide Glide

Ocassionally rattling on start up and durring throttle release

Starts up sometimes rattling. Also, when thottle is released. Sounds as if it is coming from the crank case but can't be sure. I did a lot of riding yesterday (over 120 miles) also in Houston, TX area. Could heat be related? Recently had the top end re-built at Republic Harley in Stafford, TX. The bike is an 88 cubic inch 2000 Harley Dyna wide glide. Air cooled and carb not fuel injected. I typically let it warm up 2min before riding. I start it with the choke out in neutral and leave the choke out for 2min or more. Then I get on it and go. Any thoughts?

OK, the chain was loose. We drained the primary adjusted the chain tension and added a quart of fresh ol to the primary. The rattling comtinues. While we had the bike running we could definitely feel that the rattling noise is coming from the primary. Any other thoughts?

It sounds to me like the primary chain may be rattling. When you start the bike, the engine is cold and the chain is at it's loosest. As you ride, it tightens up as the engine cases heat up and expand. But, when you let off on the throttle, the slack in the chain goes to the top run. This causes the chain to "lift" off the small engine sprocket. If it is loose enough, it will hit the top of the inner primary housing on the inside. Check the tension of the primary chain. It should be 3/4" to 7/8" when the engine is cold.

I'm sorry that this is about the best I can do since I'm not in a position to hear the noise for myself. It's a "best guess" check this situation. I ride a 1994 FXDWG and I love it. Just turned over 30K, no major repairs.

Good Luck

Engine will not start when hot

Try holding the throttle to 1/2 when cranking, then release the accelerator when the vehicle is running. If the car starts when you do this, replace the air filter and check the operation of the throttle bypass. Sometimes with older cars, it is necessary to do this EVERY TIME when the car is hot... sometimes easier just to hold the throttle to 1/2 than to fight with it...

Poulan pp4018 chainsaw starts and stays full thottle

Not a real common problem on this model, but I have seen this a few times. 1st if under warranty (take to have serviced). If you want to look at it your self I would start by removing Cover and looking at throttle control linkage (Key image # 38 in image of website below) to make sure that when you press trigger that linkage on carb is moving. Some timaes you can free it but sometimes it is actually the carb sticking.

Its possible one of the brake calipers is not releasing.
You may need to check each wheel off the ground to see if the brake is releasing after you push on the pedal.

Hi my days strider midi4 keeps going in reverse for about 4 seconds after you take the throttle off

spares sounds like the throttle pot is not being centered upon release making the scooter move in reverse or forward depending on which way it is off center. try pushing on the thottle lever slowly forward when you stop to see if that stops the creeping. Then you can try to adjust the pot by loosening the lever and retightening it in the forward direction that stops the creeping. You might have to order a new throttle pot assembly to get this working right. Hope this helps

When I go to start my 04 grand prix it sounds like its going to start fine then it just dies. If I push the gas a little as I turn the key it revs up and starts fine. What's the deal?

take a long look at the throttle position sensor and idle air control. Before starting push the accelerator pedal all the a way to the bottom of travel and release quickly. Now try to start. Sometimes the ECU loses track of where the TPS is and pressing the gas pedal on full and releasing can sometimes help reset things. One thing you must do is clean the interior of your throttle body by disconnecting the air ducting and getting in there with a cloth soaked in WD40. If you have an idle air control valve mounted on the throttle body remove it and clean the associated passageways and valve interior. Reassemble and you should notice a difference

Clutch rattle

this sounds like an adjustment issue. you did not mention the mileage...The clutch is released by a bearing, this release bearing needs to come back off of the fingers of the clutch pressure place, early wear and noise happens.

Near the end of the clutch life, you may find that you cannot release any more, if your model is adjustable.

Start with proper clutch release adjustment.

i'm not too sure but it sounds like theres a problem with the actual throttle. there could be a pressure release in the throttle line thats not working right or like in a car the pully/lever like system that controls the throttle is messed up. i would check to make sure your model has a pressure release or is known for falty throttle gauges. hope that helps
