Question about Honda V-Twin Magna Motorcycles

1986 v65 Mag - will start with full choke only but will die as soon as you back the choke off or crack the throttle. Has fuel pressure and is warmed up. Last year it did the same thing but once it warmed up would be ok.

You need to disassemble and properly clean the slow circuit/slow jets of your carburetors. Unfortunately, Your carb rack is very delicate. There are some brittle and expensive($40 each) crossover pipes that may crack or leak if the rack is removed for cleaning. I would try lowering my fuel level to just the lower tank and adding half of a cup of "Chevron Techron" to the gas (basically you want one gallon of gas with a shock treatment). Unplug the fuel line from the fuel pump and pour some Techron directly into the carbs. Now start the bike and run it long enough to make sure the treated fuel is in all the carbs. Turn off the bike and let it sit overnight. In the morning drain the carbs, restart the bike , and idle or slow drive till the carbs idle again( usually 5 to 15 minutes). If bike is starting to idle, drive to the gas station , fill the tank and drive the treatment through. With any luck this will solve your problem without an expensive disassembly/cleaning. Use "Chevron Techron", not Chevron fuel treatment with Techron, Techron is more concentrated.

    uhi my name is chris i have replaced the spark plugs or my dad has but the bike sat for three years. We dad and myself have been working on the choke it is stuck in one position but by moving the pin on one side of the bike aka the throttel pin can get it to start . NOTE we have changed the battery,spark-plugs,oil and gas and have drained the bike and added cleaner fluids mixed with premium gas also if it is the engin flooded how do you solve thaT

have you left the choke open ? this mixes more fuel to the engine upon starting but will stall it if left open too long . check your fuel filter too it may be full of debris.

I have an older shindaiwa 450 that has sat for a year in the house with no gas and was running well when I stored it but now it will start with choke on only and if it continues to run,it dies at full...


Check the fuel filter, air cleaner, and muffler for plugging. Check the fuel lines for decay or other damage. If this doesn't help, remove the carburetor, clean the interior with spray carburetor cleaner. Check the condition of the lower chamber diaphragm--it must be flexible with no cracks or holes. I have a 2003 ttr225 I can get the bike to start with the choke on ihave to let it warm up for an extremly long time before I can push in the choke . once the bike is warm and I hit the throttle hard ,...


Sounds like the idle circuit in the carb is restricted. The engine is running on the choke only. When the engine reaches a certain temp the fuelthat does get is more readily burned allowing you to back off the choke. The choke probsbly can't be completely opened? right? Fuel quality is also something to consider Oil content in fuel affects combustion temps and volatility. _good luck_Ned_

sounds like the reason it starts and idles fine at start up is your choke is functioning... as your vehicle warms up.. the choke starts to kick off... Inspect your throttle body and idle control motor.

Weedeater dies when you open choke


After you start it and are in the second stage of the choke (half choke ) let it run for awhile until it warms a bit then try openning choke and going to full throttle.

My chainsaw starts with choke when choke is off and i press trigger it just dies like its getting no fuel


Check the fuel filter, muffler, and air cleaner for plugging. Check the condition of the fuel lines for hardness, splitting, end rot, or kinking. Make sure the carburetor fasteners are tight. If no help, remove the lower carburetor chamber cover and examine the diaphragm and fuel metering valve that it controls. The diaphragm should not be hard, cracked or have any holes. The fuel valve has a rubber tip that may have deteriorated. If looks ok, then turn both L and H jet needles CW to stops (lightly), then back out CCW 1-1/2 turns each. Engine should start and run with these basic settings. Allow the engine to warm up, then pull the throttle full on. Adjust H needle CW until the engine speeds up somewhat, but is 4-stroking. Correct adjustment is when the engine continues to 4-stroke, but immediately 2-strokes when cutting. Allow to idle, and adjust L CW until the engine runs fairly well, but will allow the engine to 'follow the throttle'. Set idle speed screw so that the chain stops moving, but the engine continues to run. Hope this helps!

Choke when warm


The old gas might have done the unit in!
Stale fuel is MUCH more susceptible to pre-ignition and detonation and could possibly have ruined the rings/piston/cylinder.
The symptom you describe is, without a doubt, an engine suffering from fuel starvation.
The quick and easy check? Set the unit on the ground and grab the starter rope and try to pick the saw up using only the rope handle. Good compression should support the weight of the saw.
If it fails that test, pull the muffler off and check the piston/rings/walls for scoring. If it looks ugly, it's cooked.
If not, go back to the fuel supply. Fuel lines are especially suspect when old gas has contacted them. Lightly pressurizing the fuel line and flexing it might reveal tiny holes and/or cracks that would cause a starvation condition. Check fuel filter while you're in there!
Finally, open the carb and check the inlet screen directly opposite of the inlet needle. Hold it up to light to VERIFY that it isn't swollen shut. (Another problem caused by stale fuel.) Check that the diapragm is soft and pliable and has no holes.

where the valves set cold or hot? could make the world of a difference...is there intake leaks? bad floats perhaps....its a problem that will take some time cancelling out problem by problem
