To begin with, I assume you already have the old pushrods out. If you plan on cutting the old ones out, cut them with a pair of bolt cutters, not a "zizz wheel". The metal shavings and wheel grit gets into the engine unless you are very careful.

Now, most S&S pushrods are threaded 32 threads per inch. So, Check yours and make sure they are threaded this way. Adjust the pushrod as short as it will go. Then turn the adjuster out three full turns and measure the disance it lengthens the pushrod. It should be right at 0.100 inch. If this is correct proceed.

Bring one piston to top dead center on the compression stroke. This will be when the piston it at top dead center but both of the tappets are down in their bores. Insert the pushrod in the tube and make sure you have all the various O-rings for the tube in the tappet block and the head. Insert the pushrod into position and using your fingers extend the adjuster until the pushrod is tight against the tappet, zero lash. Then, turn the adjuster out an additional three full turns, 18 flats. Lock the lock nut down and do the same thing with the other pushrod. Do not turn the engine over until the tappets bleed down and you can turn both pushrods with your fingers.

Once you can turn both pushrods with your fingers, do the same thing with the remaining cylinder. Theory is the hydraulic tappet has approximately 0.200" travel in it. You want to adjust the pushrod so that the plunger is about halfway in the travel of the tappet.

On a evo Harley Davidson how do I get my pushrods lowered so I can install my rocker boxes

the push rods are at a required length to activate the rocker gear
by shortening the push rods the valves will not open and the engine will not go

WARNING: Uneven tightening will warp the head. Tighten Cylinder Head Bolts down evenly by hand. Then using torque wrench tighten in sequence, in 9 N m (80 lb-in) increments to 25 N m (220 lb-in).
Intake valve push rods are aluminum.
Exhaust valve push rods are steel.
DO NOT interchange push rods.

If you have the stock pushrods, you can't!

I think it was sometimes during the EVO engines (which pre-date your Twin-Cam engine), Harley switched to NON-ADJUSTABLE push rods.

Installing push rod Mitsubishi Eclipse

The engine is a overhead cam engine so no push rods are fitted
the first thing to check will be the starter motor solenoid then the starter motor for operation
anything else will require the engine to be removed to check the timing and why the engine won't crank

Hi Anonymous, on old Harley Davidsons valve train tick can be caused by parts reaching thier service wear limits and based on years of experience and assuming that the tappet rollers and bearings and cam lobes are in good shape to eliminate anonnying valve tick I reccomend adjusting the pushrod when the the engine is warm to hot. When the front cylinder exhaust push rod is all the way up, adjust the rear cylinder exhaust push rod untill it spins but with noticeable drag. Then when the front cylinder intake push rod is all the way up adjust the rear cylinder intake push rod in the same manner. Apply the same procedure for adjusting front cylinder push rods. Exhaust Push rod tube is leaking oil 1990 heritage oring is shot...thought i had adjustable pushrods that would be easy to remove...Im not the original owner so i do not know the I have pushrods...

bolt cutters if only the chrome tube covers are to long to get to the rods and then you should snug them up with no play without moving the lifters and then tighten about 20 squares or three full rotation and a quarter, marking the bottom and top bolts so you can count each time

Last december we went to adjust the valves for the first time and there were no push rods installed on the left side. We installed new push rods and it has run great until now. Sept. 2010. both push rods...

Happened to me also, seems a very common problem on B&S V twins. Reading on the web leads one to conclude that poor design and ever worsening gasoline quality are the culprits. I usually run a midgrade or high octane gas in my mower, when I bent my rods I had just put in a tank of the Duke & Duchess low rent stuff. Also I could not help but notice that the replacement rods from B & S were much heavier duty than the ones I bent.

Average cost for tie-rod replacement

Average cost for a tie rod is around 80-120 dollars depending on where you go. Then the alighnment afterwords which normally is around 79 dollars.

I would suggest buying the tie rod yourself and taking to a shop to install. Tie rods are normally between 20-30 dollars. Yourll save yourself money on the parts cost.
