Question about 1995 Yamaha Xv 250 Virago S

1 Answer

Virago left on PRI and now won't start...

I left my Yamaha XV Virago on pri for an hour and forgot to turn it off. It started no problem and I was able to ride it around 1km and it rode fine, but then it suddenly stopped responding to the throttle and cut out completely... when I tried to start it again, nothing..! I'm able to push start it fine, but as soon as I put it into gear it dies again... any advice?

Check your oil level. If your carburetor overflowed and filled the engine with gas you may have fowled your air filter with oil/gas. If your level is too high you will have to change you oil. Also check your air filter to make sure is is not gas/oil fowled it may need changing.

Hi, Jen before testing any electrical component in the Starter Circuit it is "IMPERATIVE" that you have a fully charged battery of 12.5 volts or more and be able to pass a proper "LOAD" test because your battery may have 12.5 volts or more but little or zero amps causing the battery to be faulty and must be replaced, especially "AGM" batteries.
1. Ignition Switch not in the "ON" position.
2. Engine Run Switch in the "OFF" position.
3. Check the battery terminals for damage or corrosion check the battery cables at "BOTH" ends for loose, corroded, or broken connectors, "INSIDE" and outside the cable harness, perform connector wiggle test and check cables with an ohmmeter.
4. Bank angle sensor needs a reset or is faulty.
5. FOB battery low or dead.

I have a yamaha virago 250 and it has started dieing everytime I come to a stop, any suggestions

Adjust your idle mixture. It's a matter of turning a screw located under the tank on the left side of the bike a HAIR. Adjust it after the engine is warm. You don't want it to sound too revved up, but just enough. If you adjust it and the throttle is choppy, you turned it too far to the right. Turn it back just a touch to the left to lessen the mixture ifthis happens.
Good luck!

What is the off position for the petcock in the vstar 250? I only see ON, PRI, and RES. I just got the bike from someone else and I know that you are supposed to turn the petcock to the off position when...

up (res) is reserve, down(on) is primary, center(marked as pri is for prime, used for if ran out of fuel or drained the carb or been sitting for a long time). There is no off as the fuel system is vacuum fed instead of greavity)

If it is possible to start at all. Fresh fuel fresh engine oil good battery. You may have the following problems; Corroded and blocked carburetor fuel system, bad wire connections piston ring set up.... I hope it was kept indoors and the fuel was drained out before it was left sitting. Good luck, they are nice bikes.
