My guess woud be that you either have not got the timing set correctly or something to do with the intake/ carb.

Since you say you replaced the advance weights, this tells me that you removed the breaker plate. I hope that you replaced the entire mechanical advance unit unstead of just the weights. The problem is that the pivot pin wears and replacing the weights does not replace these pins. I always use the needle bearing equipped units.

Now, to check the timing, connect a timing light to the front cylinder and start the engine. Remove the timing plug from the left side of the engine and shine the light in the hole. Bring the engine up to about 2500 RPM. You should see a "dot" in the middle of the hole. If not, you'll have to move the breaker plate to change the timing.

Intake and carb. I've seen brand new intake clamps with new "rubber bands" leak. I always pressure test them. To do this, you must make a plate that replaces the carb and bolts on to the intake. In the middle of this plate, there should be a hose nipple. Rotate the engine until both intake valves are closed and apply about 5 PSI pressure to the intake. Spray soapy water on the intake and clamps to find the leaks. Once the leaks have been stopped, work on the carb.

If you're using the original Keihen carb, you'll probably find that the slow speed jet or the idle port is plugged up. I'd disassemble the carb and soak it in carb cleaner. Make sure all the air and fuel passageways are clear. If the idle mixture adjusting screw is frozen up, trash the carb and get another one.

Good Luck
Steve

1994 harley 883 won't stay running with choke in. Then back fires when i have the throttle going? is there a way i can clean the carb myself?

This actually sounds like an intake leak, most likely where the intake manifold meets the cylinder heads.

With it at idle, spray a little carb cleaner at the joint between the above mentioned two, and if the idle picks up, there's a leak.

This is common on Harleys, as over time, the rubber seals break down with the engine heat.

97 harley davidson sportster 1200 spits, sputters, and stalls

Hi Anonymous, popping, coughing, spitting, or backfiring through the carburator or induction module can be caused by air getting sucked in combustion chamber do bad intake seals leaking. Leaking exhaust gaskets can also be suspect. Remove air cleaner and backing plate, while engine is idling spray WD-40 or Brake Kleen around intake manifold to head area, if RPM's increase you have an intake leak and seals need to be replaced, also spark plugs will be burning whiter than normal. Good luck

What symptoms would have if intake manifold seals needed to be replaced would bike just sometimes stall but start right back up 2000 harley sportster.

Rough idle always but especially when cold.Check your spark plugs for contamination.
Drain the bowl of the carb to get the water out.Drive it enough or drain fuel and put in fresh
92 octane. Check air cleaner to see how dirt it is. In general do all the things that is done with a tune up.
Good Luck and Ride Safe

Backfires thru carb.spits and hesitates

have you add anything or adjusted anything? spray some soapy water at the intake seals while the bike is running (idling) if the idle changes you have intake seal leak and if you have added an new air filter other than stock you may be running to lean and need to rejet

Bike wont idle without choke

you need to take your carb off give it as good cleaning. also check your intake gaskets where the manifold joins the jugs and the black rubber one where the carb joins the manifold. You def have air/fuel problem going on. also check your vscume hose to the carb but im thinking that is not it.

1996 harley sportster. It idles fine but when going it acts like it isn't getting enough gas.

First check for a leak around your manifold. You may just have an intake leak. Shine a flashlight between your jugs and see if their is black sooth around your manifold where it joins the jugs. The guy above doesnt have a clue. It really does sound like an intake leak.
