Firstly ensure that the battery is adequately charged. If so, and the starter clicks, odds are you need a new starter, you can try hitting it with a rubber mallet, if it starts after that then you definitely need to replace the starter.

Kawasaki starter not engaging

Hi, Ricky the starter drive/Bendix/clutch is a mechanical gear driven component that engages the clutch pack ring gear to turn over the engine. It has an internal mechanism that allows the gear to turn in one direction and once the engine starts allows the drive gear to free spin. If gear free spins in both directions then the drive gear has failed, it is not serviceable and needs to be replaced.

My van started this a.m. While waiting I turned it off now it just clicks when I try to start it my fuse box was open and the nbs relay fuse is gone is that my problem someone said starter

Sometimes if you put car into gear with the engine off handbrake off you can rock the vehicle forwards and backwards.this can free up the starter pinion and solenoid.also tapping the end of starter with a hammer and if you can see a small nut on the end of starter you may be able to turn it using a spanner which can free up a stuck starter.prognosis usually not good for starters that start locking up.replace before much longer.also check all the connecting leads and battery terminals for loose connections.

New battery van would click then started one day and starter would not shut off got new starter fine for two days then does same thing and started smoking what is causing this

if there is a relay in the starter circuit, that is suspect
I would remove the starter motor and check 2 things
first is the condition of the teeth on the ring gear
they have a habit of burring over and the pinion gear gets stuck and will not disengage
next is to check is the pinion teeth the right number on the new starter for the ring gear
That is sometimes an issue but I would suspect first a relay , next damaged teeth on the ring gear ( they appear at specific places on the ring gear (90 degrees -120degres and 180 degrees and run for around 6 teeth where the starter initially engages the ring gear
the smoking is from a burnt out starter because when it is stuck in the ring gear , the starter becomes a generator with uncontrolled current generated going straight to ground

2002 Kia Rio, sometimes it starts up fine. More and more often it sounds like the starter motor is spinning, but its not engaging. So it's not even attempting to turn over the engine. It's not a clicking,...

very good post, few like it.
this is the starter free spinning
the solenoids job is the engage the teeth the fly wheel (ring gear)

the pinon shaft in starter is dirty, clean it (easy fix)
bad starter solenoid. get a new starter , most solenoids cost more.
your suspisons are dead on.

My 3000gt does not start. it makes a clicking

1. Loose battery or earth connections on bodywork/engine.

2. Starter stuck in mesh. (rock car backwards and forwards in gear to free)

3. Solenoid stuck. Tap lightly with a hammer.

4. Starter relay in or near fuse box faulty. Replace relay.

Push button starter just clicks

First guesses are a weak battery or starter relay going bad. Next time it does it, keep pushing the start switch rapidly and see if it catches. If so, the relay is going bad.

Starter on 2001 mitsubishi galant es 2.4L not working

dont know exsacly where is but should be where gear box meets engine and it sounds like the soliniod is stuck or gone or starter could be stuck in engine if manual put in gear and rock back and forward this may help relase it

New starter does not work

The spring on the starter motor helix is either stuck or broke, or the starter gear is jammed in the flywheel gear.

Take the cover off the starter motor and you can see the flywheel, starter gear, spring and helix shaft.

If its just stuck, free it up and spray some WD40 in there.

If the gear was jammed into the flywheel teeth then check for damage and wear. They are made from quite a soft metal and burrs can easily be filed and removed.

The "clunk" you are hearing is probably the starter solinoid. If you think its a more mechanical sound than that, it could be the starter taking up slack against a jammed gear.

If the engine runs file on a pull start, its unlikely to be a jammed gear/flywheel and more likely the spring is broke or the gear is stuck at the base of the helix.

If its none of those things and the clunk is the solinoid, then you will have to check to see if 12v is getting to the starter motor. If so, it might actually be the motor.

So, in order of likelyhood/checking:

1) spring stuck or broke
2) Gear jammed on helix
3) solonoid <-> motor electrics
4) gear jammed on flywheel

Its a good idea to keep in working - very sensible.
