This is a big job, but very basic, and can be done by most riders.
It just involves removing a lot of things to do the job. I had one of these bikes, but never kept it long enoungh to do a belt change, however, i looked very closely at what would be in volved.
The Rear Wheel needs to be removed first, then the front sprocket cover. Just take your time and look closely, you will see how it goes on.
Some models require that you remove the swingarm also.
If you are replacing a belt that is still on the bike, take note on how it comes off.

I have a 2005 Sportster 883, Always used shop to change oil & xmission fluid. Any problem using a standard 20w50 oil and 80w90 xmission fluid and do the work myself?

Hi Ron, I have no trouble with you doing your own oil changes but why would you want to use someone elses oil that was not designed for your Sportster to save a few pennies? If you needed a blood transfusion would you want it from a family member or some stranger? For more information about your question please visit the websites below. Good luck and have nice day.

I can scan you a copy of the wiring diagram for a 1999 model. Most wiring changes are very minor on the bikes from year to year. Contact me at wd4ity@bellsouth.net Make sure you remind me of what you need.

Drive Belt broke on my 2005 1200XLC Sportster

A Sportster is not too difficult to change. You will have to remove the rear wheel, the right shock absorber and the front drive sprocket cover to change the belt. I think you can get the belt on without pulling the front drive sprocket. I always pull it but I don't think it's really necessary. You can work the belt over the edge of the sprocket.

When you put the new belt on, put the right leg of the swingarm through the belt so that when you get the belt over the front drive sprocket, the other end of the belt is INSIDE the swingarm. Take care and do not bend the belt into a radius smaller than about 4". Bending it any smaller than that will break the fibers in the belt and shorten the life. They ain't cheap either. There should be a note in the box about this. If you must take the front drive pulley off, an air wrench will usually do the trick.

The BIG TWINS are the ones that are a real PITA.

Good Luck
Steve

How do you replace a belt on a 2001 883 sportster.

Sportsters are much easier to replace the belt on than a Big Twin.

Remove the rear wheel, remove the front pulley cover, and take the right rear shock off. You will probably have to remove the rear brake master cylinder and the rear exhaust pipe. You may have to remove the front pulley itself but usually you can get the belts off and back on without doing this.

This is a one hour job if you know what you're doing, three hours if you don't. No problem. Just don't bend the new belt into a radius of less than about 4 inches. If you bend it too much, it will damage the new belt.

Replace drive belt on 1200 harley

To change the final drive belt on a Sportster is much simpler than doing the same job on a Big Twin Harley.

Support the bike so that you can remove the rear wheel, right rear shock absorber, the belt guard, and the front pulley cover. Take the old belt off and install the new one. Put the bike back together and adjust the belt to have about a 1/2" up and down movement in the middle of the belt with 10 pounds of force applied. Make sure your rear brakes work properly before you ride the bike.

While installing the belt, do not bend the belt in a radius any smaller than 4". Bending the belt too tightly will damage the cords inside the belt and may cause premature failure of the belt.
