Hi, Jerome you may have a worn out shifter cam and or broken shifter hat bushing that being said your whole transmission needs to come out for repairs, for this scenario you need a service/owners manual if you can not find the first and best tool you ever bought for your Harley despair not, for a mere $10 you can download another one. I "STRONGLY" recommend you have this done by a seasoned professional as the procedure is complicated and requires special tools. For more information about your issue and valuable "FREE" downloads that you will need please click on the links below, and for specific information or questions feel free to contact me at xlch@mail.com. You are absolutely correct for the most part only thing is, not all Evolution powered motorcycles are 5 speeds..I own a 1988 evolution twin cam 1200 XLH 4 SPEED trap door.. So just be very careful what parts u apply... won't take much to scatter parts all over the highway and through you in the ditch or worse.

If your Sportster has a four speed transmission, it's is an older Ironhead Sportster. If it's an 883cc (900), it was built prior to 1971. I suspect that this is not what you have.

All Evolution powered Sportsters had five speed transmissions. I would suspect that your shifting problem is a broken shifter pawl in the primary. The pawl is just behind the clutch assembly. They are not difficult to replace. You may can do it without pulling the clutch assembly but I've always pulled the assembly.

As for the tranny running hot, you should be running about a quart of H-D semi synthetic primary lube for Sportsters in the primary. They will get hot since the engine and tranny are unitized and heat will be conducted throughout the engine case.

Good Luck
Steve

1998 dogde pickip automattic transmission hard shifting into second an third, first an fourth seem fine is there a fix?

Run a bottle of Lucas Tranny Conditioner in it with next oil & filter change. Continue to do that and somewhere about the 5th change you should notice smoother shifting and better fuel mileage.

Oil in air cleaner on a harley davidson 2006 883 sportster

Hi Georgianna, oil leaking from your air cleaner is caused by oil carryover from the engine. For what ever reason the breather system is not seperating enough oil mist and air from the piston downstroke. There are cheap and quick easy fixes and there are more exspensive ones. Start by trying the following:
1. Run your oil level half way between the add and full mark when hot.
2. Run oil breather lines from head into a TEE fitting below carb/induction module then a single line into a mini filter under frame.
3. Purchase Arlen Ness Super Sucker.
4. Replace umbrella valves and realign oil pump
5. Upgrade oil pump and cam plate
Good luck and have nice day.

You might want to check the linkage on the tranny, or have the bands tightend

04 Sportster 883 gearbox Clunk.

Big Twins clunk too, especially into 1st with a cold motor, even if you free the clutch off first. When I remember, I snick it into gear, pull in the clutch and roll it back and forward to free off the plates. And it still clunks. Sometimes, you will slip from neutral into 1st, almost with no effort, and no clunk and so smooth you don't believe it's engaged (but it is). Weird. I have smooth changes from 4th to 5th and back again, sometimes from 3rd to 4th, but 3rd to second and second to 1st are always a BIG clunk, even if you give it some stick to try and match the revs before changing down. I now go from second to neutral and then into 1st, which is not a lot of fun when you are negotiating a hairpin on Glenquaich at the time... A tighter primary chain seems to reduce the clunk, and there are those who say that auto primary adjusters/tensioners (does a Sporty have one of them?) reduce the clunk. Some disagree... Assume you find it's much better when it's hot..
