Need to adjust mixture on Bing carburetta (fitted to malaguti madison 400 ) carb No 64/33/311a Scooter is 2005 My problem is that after warm up say 10 min bike keeps stalling as if running too rich.

as you have replaced carbs you will need to retune for fuel intake also check its getting enough air ie.. air filter has been changed or is clogged

You need to fix the fueling first - without fuel it won't run!
Your other problem sounds like an air leak - either the manifold or the carb. Check by spraying WD-40 or CRC at the manifold and carb join while the bike is running - if the revs change (either up or down) you have a leak.

Lean mixtures burn very slowly, at times slowly enough to continue burning through the power and exhaust stroke, causing a backfire when the intake valve opens, and that flame gets a shot at the new mixture charge.

In normal operation, as the engine slows, the fuel delivery from the main circuit falls off, and the idle circuit is supposed to take over. If the idle circuit flows insufficiently, that becomes a transition to fuel starvation.

You can try pointing an unlit propane torch into the inlet air, and see if you can get closer to an idle while supplying a supplementary fuel source. You will need to do this in a way that gets propane to both carburetor inlets, maybe rigging a Y with vacuum hoses and electrical tape...

This started with work on the carburetors, so the fuel system would be the most suspect. That, and the fact that it will run at higher RPM would seem to rule out fuel delivery.

I was looking around at photos while developing this answer (needed to know whether this was a twin or a 4-cylinder), and one resource said the idle speed should be 1,200. I don't know if that's right, but maybe 1,000 RPM is too slow for this motor to keep it together. (I do doubt that, though.)

When I wrote that last sentence, I started to second guess myself, thinking "What if the fuel shutoff(s) is/are vacuum operated, and as the bike approaches idle there is insufficient vacuum to hold it/them open?" But the I rejected that, because there is even less vacuum at cranking speeds, yet the bike starts.

Hi, John and the usual suspects are:
1. Fuel tank empty.
2. Fuel supply valve/petcock turned off.
3. Fouled spark plugs.
4. Engine flooded as a result of overuse of the enricher.
5. Vacuum hose to the fuel supply valve/petcock disconnected, broken, cracked, or pinched.
6. Fuel valve/petcock or filter clogged.
7. Fuel line to carburetor or throttle body pinched or kinked.
8. Carburetor float stuck.
9. Fuel injectors clogged.
10. Severely discharged or damaged battery, you need 12.5 volts or better and be able to pass a load test if necessary.
11. Check battery terminals for damage or corrosion, check the battery cables at "BOTH" ends for loose, corroded, or broken connectors, "INSIDE" and outside the cable harness, perform connector wiggle test and check cables with an ohmmeter if necessary.
12. Loose or corroded wire connection at the coil, battery or plug between ignition sensor and CDI box.
Spark plug cables in bad condition and shorting check for leakage in the dark, cable connections loose, or connected to the wrong cylinders.
13. Ignition timing incorrect due to a faulty MAP, CKP, O2, TPS, sensors.
14. Faulty neutral, clutch lever, or kickstand safety switch.
15. Faulty fuel pump or fuse or relay.
16. Faulty CDI box.
17. A stuck bent or burnt valve.
18. Tip over sensor needs a reset.
19. Check for engine trouble codes.

Yamaha Zuma 50/Cold Start Problem

1. Fuel cap or fuel tank is not venting properly.
2. Fuel filter clogged.
3. Fuel line pinched or kinked.
4. Float needle and seat sticking.
5. Float level too low.
6. Carburetor bowl vent line clogged/blocked/pinched.
7. Idle adjusting screw set too low.
8. Air/fuel mixture screw set too lean.
9. Idle port, transfer ports, slow air jet clogged.
10. Slow fuel jet clogged.
11. Faulty fuel pump.

Hi, Zzamir the following applies to carbureted also fuel injected models and the usual suspects are:

1. Severely discharged or a damaged battery, 9 volts or lower.

2. Failed alternator/generator and or voltage regulator.

3. Loose or corroded battery terminals and or cables especially the "NEGATIVE" cable, look for loose, corroded, or broken connectors inside the cable harness at "BOTH" ends.

4. Failed main circuit breaker or ignition switch, check for loose connections and continuity.

5. Failed system and or ignition relay, check for continuity.

6. Failed ignition coil, ignition/electronic module.

7. Failed CKP, CPS, CMP, MAP, TPS, or BAS sensor, corroded, loose or broken wire connector pins/sockets.

8. Throttle cables and or idle speed improperly adjusted hot idle speed should be 950 RPM to 1000 RPM.

9. Air/fuel mixture screw improperly adjusted.

10. Water or dirt in the fuel system, carburetor or filter.

11. Restricted, blocked or kinked fuel line.

12. Fuel tank empty.

13. Gas cap is not venting properly or fuel tank venting system blocked.

14. A failed fuel pump, pressure regulator and or fuel injectors.

15. Vacuum line from intake manifold to petcock broken, cracked, or not attached, carburetor vent line plugged.

16. Needle and seat stuck closed in the float bowl.

I can start my chain saw but when I give it more gas it stalls.


Hi jbboitnott,

There are 3 things I can think of that would cause that problem. First, the saw was not warmed up enough. Second, did you cut the choke back after your saw warmed up? The third cause would be that your carburetor is not adjusted correctly.
If you did the first two things, then you could try adjusting your carburetor. The carb has to have a richer mixture when it's cold than when it has warmed up. If you have your carburetor set with the mixture too high, it would start but then choke on the extra gas when it was warmed up. Thus, you should lean out the carb.
Huskys carb adjustment screws are on the same side as the oil and gas fill caps. They are above the gas cap. The screw on the left is for leaning the carb, the one on the right is to richen the mixture.
So, turn the left screw, sometimes marked "L", counterclockwise to richen the carb. Adjust a very small amount at a time. Let it run a little, cut some wood, then adjust again, if need be.

Stalling at idle,have to feather the throtlle to keep from idleling to low. shakes alot more when is warmed up and sitting in gear at a stop?


If you bike is equipped with a carburetor, it sounds like it needs to be adjusted just a bit. If the "anti-tamper" plug has been removed from the idle mixture screw tower, you can adjust the idle mixture from the bottom of the carb for the fastest smoothest idle. The adjust the idle speed using the idle stop screw at the top front of the carb.

Only adjustment that can be made are to the idle, idle mixture and needle valve which requires some disassembly. Idle mixture should be mae when engine is warm. remove brass plug on bottom of carb ( need to drill out) be carefull, may need to remove carb. Install carb, warm up engine and adjust screw in or out to acheive best idle, then turn in 1/4 turn. adjust engine idle to 900- 950 rpm. If engine smokes under accel drop needle down 1 notch, if seems weak or hesitates under load, raise needle one notch, refer to Harley manual for specifics

Engine will not idle when warm, hard to start


There is one screw that adjusts the revs,you can increase the engine revs and it should solve the idling problem.Be careful as there may be one for air mixture which could look similar..make sure you adjust the one for the revs only.If this does not solve your problem then let us know.
