Question about 2002 Triumph Trophy 1200

1 Answer

Triumph Trophy 1200.... The battery is drained of power, so much that while I am riding it at hwy speed the bike shuts down. I have a trickle charger on the battery making sure it is fully charged before riding. My first try was replacing the battery, thinking the 3 year old battery would not hold a charge. I put a new fully charged battery in yesterday, and within 1 hour the bike shut down.

    thanks for your response. This of course brings up more questions.

    Is there an easy way to test to find out if the rectifier.....(I think this is in the alternator) the problem....

You have a pretty heavy drain on your battery. Find the fuse box. Remove all the fuses. With volt/ohm meter, read each fuse socket to find which one is drawing the power - when you find it ... investigate the circuit to find the short.

It may be that you are not making power ... your rectifier may be shorted which not only prohibits charging ... in some circumstances, it will actually cause a short to ground.

    Maybe .... depends on your level of cleverness ...

    Let me tell you about rectifiers ... then I will pass the ball to you .. you can run with it or you can drop it.

    Alternators are NOT self exciting (you must put power in to get power out). Alternators make AC. Generators ARE self exciting, they make their own power to make power. They make DC. DC can go right into the battery ... if AC shows up at a battery ... it is of no value and may be of some danger. Your motorcycle has a alternator.

    A rectifier accepts the output of a alternator and 'converts' it to rectified AC (it now looks like DC on a scope). The rectifier does this by clipping one-half of every AC cycle and sends it to ground allowing the other one-half to pass through to the battery.

    If you had a flash light battery, a flash light lamp, two paper clips and your rectifier, you can test it as follows. First, make sure the light will light with the battery. (use the paper clips to make the connection). Next, with the rectifier unplugged from the circuit see if you can get the light to light through the leads on the rectifier ... if it lights ... great ... now, reverse the leads ... if the light still lights ... BAD, if it stays off ... GOOD. Power should pass in only one direction. You are 'creating' somethng that looks like "AC" to the rectifier by reversing the polarity (when you reverse the leads).

    If your test results are not conclusive, you can have your rectifier tested at your motorcycle shop to be sure.

    I hope this helps you resolve your problem.... ride safe.

    Thanks for your interest in - thanks for the 4 thumbs up ... I need all of those I can get to get my average up.

What is causing triumph speedmaster 2007 to backfire threw exhaust on start up

You will most likely find that the battery is not at peak charge. You mostly find that this happens on first start ups with a cold motor.
Modern bike electrics have a constant draw on the battery (only in milliamps) that leaves them down on power at start up. I have found leaving the battery on a trickle (tender) charger helps.

Need to lower my 96 triumph trophy 1200 need options

I had the same problem with my 1995 GL1500SE Goldwing. It sat to tall so I had the seat shaved right at the forward edges and had the boot maker build up another inch of sole on my riding boots. It was a lot cheaper then suspension modifications and didn't upset the geometry of the motorcycle.
Over all gain was about 2.5 inches

Trophy 1200 overheating low mileage!

hey, just finished huge ride across europe on one. Look at radiator and water pump, check oil levels and type of oil used. sounds like a blockage in water pump and or, radiator or hoses. Check electrical fan is running after bike stops? If fan is not working the bike will over heat as it requires fan to draw air trough the radiator constantly. Terry Tourer Australia

Intermittant power lose on 1996 tronph trophy 1200. 15000 miles

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

To my knowledge, most bikes of this class would exhibit the problem you posted if they have loose/faulty:
  • RUN or KILL engine switch;
  • side stand switch;
  • or as the mechanic thinks, the CDI.
You can try and verify by simulating the first two possibilities by riding on a straight road at regular speed and with no traffic.
  • Accelerate as you normally would then switch off the RUN; do the same for the side stand, even a slight extend from rest position would kill the engine.
I doubt if it is fuel related as normally, there would be hesitation and starvation before finally stalling.

Good luck and Thank you for using FixYa. Happy Holidays.
