Usually, if you go up one size on the slow jet and readjust the idle mixture this solves the problem. I think you bike came equipped with a #42 slow jet. Go up to a #45, the next step richer. If you have not drilled and removed the "anti-tamper plug" that covers the idle mixture adjusting screw, do so. Be careful not to damage the screw as they are not available seperately from Harley. This will enrichen the low speed mixture just a bit.

You can also remove the needle from the slide and install a 3 mm flat washer that is about 0.020" thick on the needle to raise it up just a bit to enrichen the midrange just a bit.

Also, check your accelerator pump for proper operation.

Good Luck

I am looking at buying a 96 883 sportster. It has 14,000 miles on it. The guys says it runs great. One thing is says that I don't understand is it says straight pipes and that they have been jetted no...

Hi Jennifer,
The straight pipes are very LOUD and in many places not legal (especially California) though some places don't fine you unless you are causing a diturbance with them. Check your state or province regulations. Jetting refers to the carbs and that they have been adjusted for the improved airflow of the straight pipes.
Maintenance on a Harley is no more expensive then any other make especially if you can do it yourself. Parts (especially chrome) for metric bikes is just as expensive nowadays.

Cherryvalleytoolmaker@msn.comHow do I get more power out of a 2003 XLH-883. Can you do jet work or purchace a new carb that is adjustable?

depending on what you want to spend , what you can do yourself it varies.

new hi-flow air filter and exhaust will add a few horses but you will also need a carb adjustment to go with that
new cams will also add to your output

98 Sportster 883. starts & w/ choke, won't take throttle or choke off w/o stalling. Bike sat for a long time (years). Used Gumout to clean carb b4 pulling tank, cleaning & put fresh fuel -...

No, nothing else to check. You need to completely disassemble the carb and clean it out. When gasoline left in the float bowl evaporated, it left behind the gummy additives that the refinery puts in the gasoline. This mess has clogged the jets and small passageways in the carb. The reason it runs with the "choke" out is that it is not a real "choke" but rather an "enricher circuit". It has it's own air passageway and fuel metering "jet" in the float bowl.

Good Luck

My harley 2004 sportster XL883 is starting, but it is backfiring alot and when i try to ride it has no power.

Is it backfiring through carb or exhaust? Has it been sitting for any period of time? We suspect carb issues. Try cleaning carb, pay special attention to the pilot jet and main jet circuits. Clean with spray carb cleaner and air, do not use wire. Make sure needle and seat are clean.

I have a 1996 883 Harley Sportster with a S&S carb (E) . When ideling its ok , but as soon as you try to excelerate it cut right out . Could it be the excelerator pump ?

Suspect items are the float level, accelerator pump, acc. pump inlet and exit check valves, off idle circuit, and main jet circuit. Be certain that you have no intake leaks.

Carbureted Harleys that will only run with the enrichment knob pulled out require a partial disassembly as the slow jet is most like clogged and/or the entire carburetor and fuel system needs to be cleaned &serviced.

My motorcycle pauses caughs then backfire during excelleration

you may have to tweak your carb a little. Your airflow/ gas mixture may be a little off. I just had the same problem with mine. If you have changed your pipes at all. You need to have your carb rejetted and adjusted to match the pipes.
