If they are black when you pull them out with oil on you them probably need new rings or its possible that the engine is running rich and fouling the plugs and needs carbs adjusted.

1998 bmw 540i having a misfire on cylinder 5 changed the plugs and coil packs. It ran fine for a couple days, then it began again, giving me a check engine, and it's idling rough at low rpms.


Is the same cylinder causing the problem? If so take a close look at the spark plug for fuel fouling. The cylinder may be over fueled causing plug fouling. You may also have a bad coil or defective spark plug. Try swapping coil and plug with one from adjacent cylinder to see if misfire changes to that cylinder

Fouling plug


Get one heat range higher plug for your motorcycle. If it is fouling, Im guessing this is a high mile motorcycle. You dont say anything about make, model, year or miles.

92 vt600, only back cylinder is firing


How so it isn't fouled? If it is getting any gas at all there should be gasoline on the plug assuming the cylinder is in fact not firing. Is the plug sparking? If so what about the carb? Compression check?

Rear cylinder is cool to the touch, the front one is hot


The spark plug on the rear cylinder isn't firing. Check the plug for fouling and make sure the spark plug wire is good and connected to the coil and plug properly. Also check the spark plug gap (0.040)

Hi Dale,

Several factors can contribute to spark plug fouling:

- The air/fuel ratio may be too rich as a result of incorrect carburetor adjustment or a poorly performing fuel injection system.
- Worn piston rings or valve seals may allow too much oil to leak into the combustion chamber, leading to oil fouling.
- The ignition system may not be performing properly.
- Prolonged idling or continuous low-speed driving may keep the spark plug from reaching its optimum operating temperature. Using too cold a spark plug can lead to the same problem.
- A dirty air cleaner can create a too-rich condition which can lead to fouling.

Have each of the above checked and corrected.

Fuel, oil and carbon fouling can all be the result of different causes but, once a spark plug is fouled, it will not provide adequate voltage to the firing tip and that cylinder will not fire properly.

In many cases, the spark plug cannot be cleaned sufficiently to restore normal operation. Hence, I always recommend that a plug be replace, once it becomes fouled.

1999 Kawasaki VN 1500 Vulcan Classic rear cylinder spark plug oil fouling


Hi, Mykdglfr and the usual suspects are:
1. Dirty air filter.
2. Fuel mixture too rich or the choke has been left on too long.
3. Faulty spark plug.
4. Incorrect spark plug heat range for the engine type or service.
5. Piston rings badly worn or broken.
6. Valve guides are badly worn and/or seals worn, crushed or have come off the valve guide and are pumping oil through it.
7. Spark plug cable weak or leaking check for spark leakage in the dark.
8. Faulty ignition coil.
9. Low RPM nonaggressive riding style.

Not hitting on all cylinders 1999 honda shadow 750 with 5000 mile

No hitting means not firing?
Assuming tht its not firing up upon cranking,
please check if theres gas coming to the spark plugs and sparks too.
Not a bad idea to replace the spark plugs if they are fouled up!

Rear cylinder not firing


The first thing I would do is replace the spark plugs again. You can foul a plug and it will cause you more problems than you can ever imagine. I see you have done all the logical things that I would recommend but I did not see you have replaced the plugs after the 200 miles. You would be surprised at how many times a $2.00 part can cause fits beyond belief.
