Dennis, Maybe try changing your plugs, unburnt fuel may be getting in exhaust because of weak plug.. Read the following links, very informative in telling causes of and some suggested fixes on backfiring. Check the attached links, instruction and guides, Good luck

Does it also get poor gas mileage? The cam sensor may be the problem. The common problem is the magnet in the cam falls out, the ECM puts the engine in a mode that it will run but the timing is off usually causes bad gas mileage and could cause backfire.

Backfire

Hi Mezzanotony, popping, coughing, spitting, or backfiring through the carburator or induction module can be caused by air getting sucked in combustion chamber do bad intake seals leaking. Leaking exhaust gaskets can also be suspect. Remove air cleaner and backing plate, while engine is idling spray WD-40 or Brake Kleen around intake manifold to head area, if RPM's increase you have an intake leak and seals need to be replaced, also spark plugs will be burning whiter than normal. Good luck and have nice day.

Car is backfiring like no gas it has fuel injection

most times-a backfire is caused by being slightly out of time or bad valves--not sure of your year make or model of car. Sometimes the timing will jump and cause the firing order to be wrong and you'll get a backfire and the car will run ruff

I have a 97 jeep cherokee that stalls and backfires and it has backfired to the point where it blew open my muffler. It doesn't backfire all the time, just at times...what can it be?

It's not possible to pinpoint, with just online info, what is causing the backfire, but if it blew your muffler open, the engine is definitely dumping raw fuel into the exhaust. Look into what can cause excessive fuel to be dumped into the exhaust and you may find the cause of your problem.

I had the same prob with my 97, It was not the head gasket but the O-ring on top of the head. Replaced the O-ring and has been running good for a year now with no backfire. Hope this helps.

Backfire into intake

I'ts quite possible that your distributor is installed one tooth off and is too far advanced, causing the plug to fire before the intake valves are closed completely. Turn it one tooth counter-clockwise and try it again.
