Installing new starter

use a test light to check for power on battery cable at starter and then power to smaller wire while someone holding in key in crank position. If you have power to both your new starter needs to be warrantied/replaced

Ignition issue

Have a load test done on the battery to check for a failing cell. Check battery terminals are shiny clean and tight. Check for power from the ignition switch to the starter solenoid as this is the circuit you by pass when you short out the starter terminals.

I try to start my Lincoln town car and when I turn the ignition on the electrical battery system goes down but won't turn over. I have installed a new car battery

You would need to take a meter or test light and check for power after the battery. You could have a bad connection inside one of the cables.
There should be 12 volts at the battery post and at the cable end on the starter. Also be sure and check the ground connections.

2001 FORD ESCAPE - new Battery still wont start - no lights no radio no crank

I remember the same thing happening to a Ford car - when the battery was removed, the wire supplying power to the vehicle dropped onto the battery tray and was covered when the battery was replaced. The guy reconnected all the wires he could see but could not understand why his car remained dead.

I expect something similar has happened to your car.

1996 250 trailblazer...starter just clicks and i put a new battery in it and the tail light wont come on and i replaced the bulb

It would say the starter brushes are bad inside your starter. The brushes can be replaced once the starter is removed, a much cheaper option than installing a new starter. To be sure it is your starter and not the solenoid, find the solenoid next to the battery. There is a wire from the positive post on the battery to the solenoid. Opposite of that post on the solenoid the wire goes to the starter. If you have access to a test light, hook the clamp on the test light to battery negative. Put the probe of the test light on the solenoid post that goes to the starter, try starting the atv and see if your test light lights up. If it lights up, you are getting power to the starter, which means your brushes are bad. If it does not light up, you are not getting power through your solenoid, solenoid will have to be replaced. If you don't have access to a test light, a simple method would be to stick an old insulated screw driver between the two posts on the solenoid to jump the circuit. If the starter turns over the solenoid is bad, if it clicks the starter brushes are bad. As far as the tail light not working, I would check the connection on the bulb itself. Even though the bulb is new, the connection it goes in to might be corroded or not making a good contact. Also check the wires going in to the bulb for a loose or corroded connection. Hope this helps, let me know if you need any more assistance, Daniel.

The car sat for 2 months the battery died install a new one i get power but wont turn over its a 2003 mini cooper s could the starer freeze up

A starter freeze-up would probably give forth much smoke from the wiring and the starter motor itself. You need a test light or meter to check for power at the starer solenoid. Check from ground (engine block) to the terminal that connects to the positive battery cable (should light). If nothing, check the battery terminals for corrosion (use a special battery cleaning brush from your auto parts store --cheap) and check the cables near the terminals for excess wire corrosion. Recheck for power at the solenoid again--it should now give light (meter read 12.6 volts). Try the starter again--if only hear a 'click', test at the starter motor terminal for power when the key is turned. If you get light, then the starter motor is defective (likely a bad brush or spring) and should be removed for repair or replacement. If you got no power at the starter terminal, then replace the solenoid. Hope this helps!

Engine will not start. The bike started on Jan 2, 2010 no problem. I have left idle since in CA (not too cold). Feb. 8 I tried to start my bike and it just made a clicking sound, but didn't start. I...

Sounds like the starter, but lets check some things out ok! Usually when a stater makes that clicking noise it means there is some thing wrong with the starter, some times its the spring that engages the starter gear. First I would check the power going to the starter. Using either a test light or an ohm meter check that power is reaching the starter, now you can do this by checking the power wire on the starter while the start button is pushed. If there is power going to the starter then you know it is the starter, If no power getting there than check for in line fuses or possible relays! But my guess is that you are getting power and the starter is malfunctioning! In which case you will need to remove the starter and rebuild or replace. There is a crude procedure you can try if you'd like sometimes the starter spring sticks down after sitting, if you tap the starter on the housing some times it will free up and once the bike is running the heat will straiten it out! good luck if you have further questions please feel free to ask!
