Question about 2003 Harley Davidson XLH Sportster 883 Hugger

1 Answer

883 sportster with no electrical power

The battery is fully charged, terminals are corrosion free, and polarity is correct. I have continuity across the breaker and all fuses are good. I have a good ground to the frame and the cables are relatively new and in tact.

I have no lights and the starter never so much as clicks. I thought it might be a problem with the ignition switch, but I stuck pins through the wires so I could test for continuity and the switch seems to be working. If I jumper the pins/wires together, I still don't get any lights. The horn doesn't work either.

I can disconnect the positive wire from the horn and run a jumper from the battery over to the terminal and the horn sounds off nice and loud, which again confirms that I have a fully charged battery and solid ground.

Any ideas?

Sounds to me like you've got a security system problem. It's strange that you have power to the switch and fuses and then it stops. You do have power to the fuses don't you. You said you had continuity but you didn't say you had power. I've looked at the latest schmatic that I've got (1999-on) and I don't see anything that would stop everything from working on your bike. Now, Harley may have changed something and my schematic doesn't show it but I would think you would have something showing that the security system had everything locked out. Sorry I couldn't help.

Good Luck

Hi, Eric and the usual suspects are:
1. Fouled spark plugs.
2. Severely discharged or a damaged battery should have 12.5 volts or more and be able to pass a proper "LOAD" test if necessary, you may have a preliminary reading of 12.5 volts or more but little or zero amperage the battery is faulty and must be replaced, AGM batteries fail in this scenario more so than lead acid batteries.
3. Check battery terminals for damage or corrosion, check the battery cables at "BOTH" ends for loose, corroded, or broken connectors, "INSIDE" and outside the cable harness, perform connector wiggle test and check cables with an ohmmeter if necessary.
4. Loose connection at ignition coil or plug between ignition sensor and module.
5. Spark plug cables in bad condition, shorting/leaking, spark plug cable connections loose check for spark leakage in the dark.
6. Faulty ignition coil or electronic control module.

The battery that's in my 1993 883 Sportster is not the correct one. The terminals are not in the right place. Does any one know what the proper battery group is for this application...?

I tried the pep boys route of getting a battery...i would have had to put the acid in the battery and charge it.i wasted like $70 and couldnt use it. i went to Harley and bought their gel battery for i think around $80 , that was in feb. 2008!!though i ride my bike daily,i run 2 sets of blue l.e.d. lights and im still using the same battery. ive got over 4 years so far and it was charged and ready when i bought it!!

I have a 2005 883 sportster. have a battery less than a year old sat for 2 months. originally i went to start it and lights everything came on but not enough juice to kick over. i charged the battery and...

Check you have connected battery leads properly, failing that, check you have not blown a fuse,
Just as a further tip, if you intend to leave your bike for a while why not get a trickle charger, you can opt for a special designed one ie Oxford Optimiser, or Cheaper if you live in the U.k. you can get a Solar One frok Maplin, reduced to £9.99 they are great, Hope This helps

I need to know how to polarize a generator for a 1969 HD sportser

To polarize the generator you must make sure you have a fully charged battery first. Then make sure the regulator is correctly connected to the generator. Then take a heavy gauge wire and momentarily connect it between the positive side of the battery and the “A” post of the generator. The “A” is the post is the left/front post if you are looking at the installed generator from the left side of the bike.
