My gear shift is stuck in park.

Hi there, I'm Al the owner of Big As Auto Repair

I look forward to helping you with your problem. Two possibilities, the most likely first. (1) The shifter itself could have an issue. Because sometimes the solenoid in the shifter quits working OR the release mechanism could be broken. (2) The shifter cable going to the transmission could be frozen or the transmission itself could have an internal problem. If you need further assistance go to my website below. Have an awesome day! 2003 dodge caravan sport wont shift out of 1rst gear 3.8 engine, 155000 miles, started with transmission problem when slowing down it would thump into 1rst gear, now when accelerating it wont come out of...

The transmission control module is expensive and if the valve body solenoids went bad, then you didn't get a raw deal. Labor, parts and fluid are about right price wise.
You could not fix it on your own without a lot of tools and knowledge of the transmission.

Car is stuck in second gear and wont go in reverse. it is a 1995 suzuki swift cino with a 5spd manual. Thoughts?

try rocking it while someone sits in it trying to pull out of second. This may give you enough play to get out of the stuck gear. Sounds like a linkage problem

replace.
and when you replace, also replace gears, as a new chain will eat up the old gears, and vise-versa.

Shifter physically won't move into reverse position

To isolate the problem as either an internal transmission problem,or external to the transmission,(shifter or cable malfunction),the shifter cables should be disconnected from the transmission. On the transmission are two levers,if you have a 5 speed trans. One is the neutral gate lever, and the other is actual gear shift lever.Manipulating the levers manually, see if the transmission will engage into Reverse gear.If the transmission engages into Reverse gear, then the problem is either in the shifter mechanism itself,or the shift cables. If the transmission will not engage into Reverse gear, then the problem is either an internal problem,or possibly a switch seized up,like the reverse gear indicator switch. At this point,i would have an assistant sit in the car, engine off,and run through all the gear selections with the shifter, while watching and looking for a cable not operating to its full stroke.Take the console apart to access the shifter mechanism and visually inspect the assembly.Disconnect the cables and operate them manually, one at a time, while an assistant watches them underhood.Visually inspect the shifter and it's mechanism for a broken, cracked,or damaged component. At this point, the problem should be identified and repaired as either cable or shifter malfunction.
