Question about 1991 Suzuki GSF 250 Bandit

Open Question

I have a suzuki LT50 I am rebuilding the top end. Are the two rings the same? Of the new rings one has a green dot on the edge one does not. Also does the little helper ring go under the top compression ring. there wasn't one in this motor when I disassembled.These are suzuki parts. Thanks, Steve

Whish piston ring is the top one

Hi, Anonymous there literally dozens of top ring designs depending on the manufacturer that being said and being a Harley Davidson Technician I can only give you advice on a 4 stroke 3 ring set the top ring on premium ring sets will usually have a silver plasma coating on the outside edge and a dot on the flat side the dot always faces up the second ring will be all one color and may have an inside bevel the bevel always faces down if there is no dot. The third ring is usually a 3 piece oil control expansion ring and the skinny rail rings can go any side there is no top or bottom bevels or dots. install the rails gap 180 degrees apart install the top and second ring gaps 120 degrees apart do not oil piston rings a few drops of clean engine oil smeared on the cylinder wall with your fingers will be sufficient. I "STRONGLY" recommend you download a service manual online for your particular year, make, and model they are usually free in pdf form or at the most between $5-10. Good luck and have a nice day.

I have an 04 Suzuki Eiger 400. Smokes a lot when first started but subsides a little after running. Im thinking piston rings but would like any other feedback before tearing the top end apart

sounds like piston rings, if rings are in bad shape,will be at its worst when cold then will get better when it warms up. Should be some power loss as well. pretty easy rebuild. good luck

I own a 2004 jetta gli. 2 piston stopped working. When changing the sparkplugs noted oil on of them. Pistons 1 and 4 still not working.


Yes this is a major problem. What I mean by that is, when ever you pull a plug and there is heavy oil on them, it comes from only two places. Head gasket seal is leaking where it comes down and seeps on to your plugs or your rings gasket is shot, so the oil is getting past your rings and getting on your plugs. Point is this, sense you have pistons that stopped working, you for sure need a ring job, and looks like a piston/ring job, this I hate to say it is a top engine rebuild. Point is, you can't just fix part, it is not going to work for longevity. You would need at least the top end rebuilt, that is where they bore out chambers, new pistons, rings, head gasket and so forth. This can be costly, guess on average top end rebuild can run at average shop 1,500 plus. For sure get at least 3 prices if you decide to have it done. Sometimes your better to get a new rebuild and have it put in, with your engine as part trade for new rebuild. Because normally, if you rebuild top end and not the bottom, then that is on borrowed time. I hate to give the bad news, but that is where it looks like what you need. Mike

I am changing piston and rings, my problem is that the ring are different, do you know which one go on the top, one is more black or dark than the oder.

Most rings are marked in one manner or another. They may have a dot on them, a angle cut on the inside towards the piston, or some other means of identifying which position it goes in and in which direction. If the two rings are different, there should be a paper to tell you how they go on the piston. Since you're asking this question here, I assume that this is not the case.

I'm not familiar with Suzuki DR-Z 250. In the case it's four stroke with three rings, two compression rings and an oil control ring. If the two compression rings are the same, no bevels, no dots near the end gaps, or other markings, I'd assume that they are the same. I would install the "brighter" ring on the top as it may be either a chrome ring or moly coated ring. Make sure you check the end gap clearance on the rings and do not align the end gaps, stagger them around the piston.
