1987 Shadow 700 charging problem

I have a Shadow 700 that's not charging enough to keep the battery going. Is there a way to tell if it's the regulatro/rectifier or the stator, or both?

Yes there is a couple of different ways to test these components, first you will need a voltmeter and the first test is an ohms (resistance) test unplug the stator and place the meter leads on the stator leads 1and 2 then 1and 3 then 3 and 2 should read between .2 and 2.5 ohms then do an insulation breakdown one lead to stator lead the other to ground should read OL or OFL if any reading stator is junk. Then test out put meter to ac-volts meter leads to stator leads start the bike should read 15-100 vac. Then as far as the reg/rec goes set meter to diode mode and place one meter lead to the power output and the other to the stator input side of the connector do this to all three wires and then rev. the meter leads and do again 0.3-0.8 forward bias OFL in rev. bias then place meter lead to ground wire on reg/rec and do the same test if you get readings in both forward and reverse bias the reg/rec is bad replace

Battery loses juice overnight

Could be a short cut in battery, when that, the water can boil and evaporates, if you still have some fluid in it, short cut will emptying the battery and you must get a new one. You can also make a test, if the alternator is charging the battery, just start the bike and measure the voltage on battery with voltage device, it should be ca 13,5-14 V.

Need to charge battery, not sure where it is?

Most motorcycle batteries are under the seat. Depending on what seat you have, the seat might have to be removed completely. Try removing the side panels on either side of the seat first to see if the battery posts are accessible.

My 87 plymouth sundance has a brand new battery and been through 2 new alternators. intalled the new alternators ,battery had to be jujmped off but then battery charged fine, a few months later decided to...

The power loss light goes on as a result of the alternator being bad.
Are you getting 'lifetime' guaranteed rebuilt alternators to replace the old ones?
If not, then the quality of the parts may not be good enough to run in your application.

Are the connections clean and shiny when removed?

Suzuki 700 intruder. battery goes dead once in a while other times stays charged. NO lights left on etc.

Test the charging system output, if it is charging at idle engine speed or if it is only charging at rpms above idle.. .(also) the battery may need to be serviced or replaced if it doesn't pass a loaded volt test.

What is the spark plug gap for my 1987 suzuki 700

Spark plug gap is something that people will have different opinions, set them as per the manual. If you are buying new ones, they should be set as per the manufacturers specification and should not need adjustment. Never bang the plug against something to change the gap, adjust with some sort of lever. Plugs tend to fracture when hit hard enough and you might never know until it doesn't work.

1987 k5 blazer dies during driving

Make sure your battery is secured by a good battery hold-down system...if the battery shifts in the tray and the positive terminal touches the fender, the dead short will immediately kill the vehicle.
Also, take the alternator to a parts store and have it tested if your battery is held down firmly. The whining noise can be bad alternator bearings. On a vehicle of this vintage, this is a possibility for the noise. It is furthermore possible that the alternator has died electrically, and during a lengthy drive, the vehicle's own electrical consumption will drain the battery and the vehicle will die en route.
When you jump it off, it gets enough charge from the donor vehicle to drive, but if the alternator is dead, it can't keep the vehicle supplied with enough energy to operate.

1987 Honda Shadow VT700 leaks oil when running

Hi, Ruff_phelps external oil deposits fall into 3 categories:
1. WEEPAGE is oil that is sweated pass gaskets, seals, o-rings, and crankcase seams, it's covered by dry dust and is normal for older engines with lots of miles, no repair is necessary.
2. SEEPAGE is the same as weepage except the deposit is wet and confines itself to a specific area, repair is optional depending on the owner's cleanliness criteria, the deposit location and the weight of his bag of "DRACHMA"
3. LEAKAGE is the same as seepage except it is enough to drop to the ground leaving a spot. Repair as necessary.
To find the source of your oil leak, start at the point where you see oil and trace its path going up and forward, blowing baby powder from the palm of your hand will help in those difficult to see areas if there is too much oil present then buy a spray can of engine degreaser apply it to the affected area then rinse off with a pressure wand or garden hose, use compressed air to blow off excess water or just let it drip dry, take your bike for a 15 minute ride and check for the leak.
