Question about 2005 Harley Davidson FLSTC - FLSTCI Heritage Softail Classic
Since I can't hear the noise for myself, the only thing I can do is give you my ideas as to the cause. Is the noise a ticking noise or a knocking noise?
First off, if it's not loud enough to make people turn their heads when you start the bike, don't worry about it. Your engine is the old pushrod design and the rocker arms are going to make a little noise. Moving mechanical parts make noise.
Now, if it's a loud noise, my first guess would be that you have a bad tappet. Either the hydraulic part of the tappet is bad and is not keeping the pushrods to zero backlash or the roller bearing on the end of the tappet is bad.
If you're sure your problem is on the front cylinder, pop the pushrod tubes loose on that cylinder. Feel of the pushrods. If you feel on that is loose, there's where your problem is. Pull the rocker box, take the rocker arms out of the lower plate and then pull the tappet block. You'll probably find a bad tappet. If so, make sure you check the camshaft for damage as well.
